Astrology of Now: Authenticity, Integrity, Valour

We are just six days into the Venus Retrograde in Scorpio –– and already you may have faced a situation that tested your integrity, questioned your authenticity or required emotional courage. Each of us is likely to be challenged during this retrograde (Oct 10-Oct 31/Nov 1) in Scorpio; Oct 31/Nov 1-Nov 16 in Libra) – and the right thing to do is to be your authentic self. This is about stripping back to the essence. People may take action motivated by jealousy or revenge, of course, but just as likely they may simply have different values from you, or even […]

Astrology of Now: Venus Down To The Bone

Every eight years, Venus, the planet of harmony and beauty takes a prolonged trip into the Underworld of Scorpio, where everything she stands for — from money to social skills to femininity — comes into question. As she goes deeper, she leaves behind her jewels, her silks, her satin slippers, her smile, her silver laughter – until she is down to muscle and bone, gracile and strong. But there’s more to this retrograde than a trip down below – and this is critical. After weeks in Scorpio, she goes back even further into her own sign Libra, where she will […]

Your Month Ahead: Podcast

It’s the equinox! Hooray. One of the four corners of the year. Here, we are turning into autumn. Sally and I met at Cliveden, a very beautiful stately home outside London, famous, or infamous, for political intrigue. That seemed appropriate for the month ahead with Venus, the planet of love, digging around in sexy, secretive Scorpio, while the Sun sails through social, polite and political Libra. It’s all pretty intriguing to say the least.

Venus in Aries: Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew

In the early spring of 1970, jazz fans were only talking about one album — a rich, textured blast of sound played with freestyle mastery and driven by an enormous rhythm section. Miles Davis, the prince of cool, had plugged in and gone electric. Not only was Davis’ use of electrical instruments an innovation on Bitches Brew, so was his use of post-production techniques in the studio. The double album was recorded over three short days in August 1969, but Davis went on to edit, layer, insert and resplice in the studio for months with his producer Teo Macero. The result was a chef d’oeuvre that spawned a new genre — […]

Astrology of Now: Venus Exalted

My daughters’ favourite moment during the recent Venus Retrograde was their discovery of a large skeleton in a lonely, crumbling ruin by the edge of the roaring Atlantic — even the 13 year old lost her composure for a full moment. They burst out of the broch — a 10th century miniature fort — and into the rain, terrified and thrilled. Then they crawled back through the dark, muddy tunnel for a closer look. The 40-day Venus retrograde can be read as Venus’ journey through the Underworld. Perhaps this was a little re-enactment of that story of Inanna’s journey to the Kur, the Sumerian hell. As you […]

April Horoscopes

It’s a very complicated picture this month, but things do slow down a lot — and about time too. It’s important to note that from April 9 to 24, Venus will be between just two degrees of Pisces, 26° and 28°. This intense focus from the goddess of love and luck is unusual and will touch you directly if you have any planets around these degrees in water signs, Cancer, Pisces and Scorpio, earth signs, Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn — or Sagittarius and Gemini. It seems as she will be especially supportive during an otherwise potentially fraught week as the […]

Aries New Moon: The Beast in Me

Wherever Aries appears in your chart, you probably don’t play well with others. Even if you prefer to delegate Aries duties to your gun-toting, raw meat-loving partner, there’s still something untamed in you beneath your refined veneer—something songwriter Nick Lowe once called The Beast in Me, and which an astrologer might call Aries.
