The great Leonard Cohen: born on this day, September 21, 1936. Ascendant and Sun are both at 27° Virgo — a great heart — and they make a perfect square to the MC in Gemini (a career as a wordsmith). The two planets of art, Venus and Neptune, are also exactly conjunct too — at 12° Virgo in the 12th house of the collective soul. Cohen’s music has, arguably, now reached a wider audience even than his brilliant peers Joni Mitchell or Bob Dylan — with the incredible success of that one tune Hallelujah, reinterpreted over and over for each generation. Digging Up Trouble
I’m writing a column for the bimonthly Infinity Astrology Magazine called Phenomena, taking a more general look at the zeitgeist. Here is my first piece. My uncle spat into a small test-tube, sealed it, and put the test-tube in an envelope. He was, quite casually, sending off a sample of his saliva to be analysed for DNA. Who would have imagined 20 years ago that mapping the human genome would have become so commonplace. This year, 2018, Jupiter, the planet of expansion, is in Scorpio, the sign of secrets, but also a sign associated with analysis, depth and detective work. […]
September 21st, 2018: Easy Agreements

Virgo Sun trine Juno in Taurus (28 deg)
Mercury in Virgo trine Juno in Taurus (28 deg)
Coming off of yesterday’s Sun/Mercury conjunction, the trines to Juno suggest that the illumination of crucial details can solidify a partnership. This is excellent energy if you want two people on the same page – the facts will mesh naturally as both parties share their practical knowledge and solutions.
This is about the quiet, easy agreement – what makes sense, what’s been proven and what works for both people. It’s not romantic, but it is reliable.
Mercury’s Transit of Libra: Listen

Mercury enters Libra on September 21st: communication and ideas are focused on agreements/disagreements, balances/imbalances and reflection. Harmony is important – words can be superficial or diplomatic in an effort to preserve the peace. Much is not said directly and it’s interesting to consider how conversational balances are achieved.
This can be the ultimate passive-aggressvie energy, as pretty phrases disguise ugly barbs. Or, it can be a relief to simply nod and smile and talk about nothing – sometimes you don’t want to discuss your inner pain. Everything that’s said is socially appropriate.
However, Mercury in Libra is a champion listener – this sign’s objective awareness means truly paying attention to what the other person is saying and reflecting what they’ve said back at them. This is done in a way that validates their ideas and encourages them to say more. It takes some skill (it’s not just about parroting their words).
Libra learns through comparison, so this brief transit can be an excellent opportunity to absorb what others tell you. Remember, Libra is always about the other and sometimes it’s better if you let them do the talking. Once Mercury enters Scorpio you can make use of the knowledge you’ve gained.
Having said this, Mercury in Libra is also very social – chatting, flirting, sprinkling compliments. The key is allowing the other person to have their say and pay close attention to how they respond to what you say. And, consider how their words reflect your energy.
Here are the aspects Mercury in Libra will make:
Sept 22nd: opposite Chiron Rx in Aries (0 deg)
Sept 22nd: inconjunct Uranus Rx in Taurus (1 deg)
Sept 22nd: square Vesta in Capricorn (1 deg)
Sept 23rd: square Saturn in Capricorn (2 deg)
Sept 23rd: trine Mars in Aquarius (3 deg)
Sept 24th: trine the Aquarius South Node (4 deg)
Sept 25th: trine Black Moon Lilith in Aquarius (5 deg)
Sept 27th: conjunct Ceres (9 deg)
Sept 30th: inconjunct Neptune Rx in Pisces (14 deg)
Oct 2nd: square Pluto in Capricorn (18 deg)
Oct 9th: inconjunct Chiron Rx in Pisces (29 deg)
Oct 9th: Scorpio ingress

Full Moon in Aries Conjunct Chiron Rx

The September 24th Aries Full Moon (1 deg) is going to be a painful one. It conjoins Chiron Rx, so this ending/result will illuminate a sore spot, weakness or area where extra courage is needed.
The Moon will square Saturn conjunct Vesta in Capricorn (Saturn is limits and rules, Vesta is ultimate focus) so your attention will be forcibly drawn to where you’re constrained. The Libra Sun will conjoin Mercury (which will oppose this Moon) so there will also be a sense of limits around what can be said – there may be hard rules about what’s appropriate to discuss. Enforced politeness that will feel uncomfortable, because Aries hates being limited. But the Chiron/Saturn/Vesta square square means there will be a rule/responsibility you cannot avoid, no matter how awkward it feels.
Note that the Sun makes a sharp inconjunct to Uranus Rx in Taurus. It’s not a major aspect but it does suggest a jolt that will unbalance (Libra) you. Not everything about this Moon will go according to plan.
Good News
But there’s also good news. The Sun and Mercury trine Mars, the South Node and Black Moon Lilith in Aquarius. The Moon and Chiron trine the Leo North Node. Harmonious aspects to the Nodes suggest that whatever happens, you can and you will move forward. Mars will power up that final break from the past (especially as he’s making his third and final conjunction to the South Node on September 26th). Black Moon Lilith ensures that this will enable a harmonious integration of truly rebellious, out-there energy: what was cast out can be brought into the center. And aspects to the North Node mean you can transmute the pain, discomfort and courage into something that makes you proud.
The battle won’t be for nothing. The work will amount to something.
The day after this Full Moon, Chiron Rx returns to Pisces. This tells us that the painful culmination will stir up issues from the past (possibly from April 2018). You’ll be revisiting an issue of forgiveness and/or release that hasn’t quite been released. Chiron temporarily out of Aries (until February 2019) will give you some breathing room if you’ve found this new battle to be especially painful.
If you look at the chart at the top of this post you’ll see a blue rectangle. This is called a “Mystic Rectangle” which consists of two sextiles and two trines joining four planets (in this case, two of the points are Nodes). There are two oppositions inside the rectangle. The mix of harmonious and challenging aspects is supposed to be excellent for making constructive things happen (the challenge motivates you while the harmony helps you). So the potential is certainly ripe for taking the pain and turning it into something better (the Nodes are your keys for this).
But of course, it’s always your choice. And I’m not going to pretend that Chiron is a fluffy bunny. Best advice is, focus on that Leo North Node (pride, power, confidence, creativity)- what’s happening there in your chart? That’s your light at the end of this tunnel. The Moon/Chiron conjunction is your motivator, and the Leo North Node is what you’re reaching for. Mars, the South Node and BML are what you’re wrapping up which will propel you towards the North Node.
Go get ‘em.
The problem with ancient astrology in a modern world

There is currently a bit of a battle in the astrological community between astrologers studying the techniques of ancient astrological sources and “modern” astrologers, those who use psychological techniques and concepts that are somewhat Eastern in origin, such as past lives and person evolution rather than a defined set of predictive techniques. I first wrote […]
