The Death of the Press

Hot-metal printing was finally killed off in the mid-1980s. Its demise had been a long time coming, as it was superseded by other cleaner, faster, cheaper technologies. London’s print unions were some of the last in the world to hold out, in the Wapping Dispute with Rupert Murdoch’s News International. When they caved in February 1987, it was the end. Imagine though, a composing room, in 1983 or even 1883. Lead type melts, is moulded, banged into place on the composing stones with wooden mallets by the compositor. On one side of the stone, the compositor; on the other, the editor: jobs strictly delineated. Editors […]

Gigantic, Widespread Lying

Last week someone told me a gigantic lie. It was so obviously a lie, I just skimmed over it.  I didn’t read it in all it’s detail, because I knew there was nothing to be gained. Of course we see … Read More…

September Horoscopes: Practical Magic

A piece of wood, some catgut, ebony: a violin. Grapes transformed into wine. Paint transformed into image. Practical magic. This month opens with a wondrous eclipse in the sign of skill and craftsmanship, Virgo, which opens up the powerful generational aspect between Saturn and Neptune, rules and imagination. These two distinct energies don’t often work together — but when they do you get something really special. You get craftsmanship and fairy dust, you get art, or wine. The second eclipse is in Pisces, Neptune’s own sign, the sign of collective emotion, mass hysteria — and mystery. Neptune in Pisces won’t […]

You won’t get it perfect today. You’ll be challenged to help/care/nurture the best you can, when it feels like your best attempts are being blocked.

Mercury in Virgo opposes Chiron Rx in Pisces and makes a sharp inconjunct to Uranus Rx in Aries, at 24 degrees. Digging for the truth behind the flaw will trigger unexpected results. There may be harsh criticisms, or the impulsive urge to correct someone. If you see something that’s just begging for improvement, take note. Acknowledge the issue, but know that you won’t be able to say the perfect thing that makes it all better. And, someone else may not be interested in your helpful suggestions.

Saturn in Sagittarius makes an inconjunct to Vesta, at 9 degrees Cancer. Vesta’s devotion to an emotional or security issue is blocked by Saturn’s external obligations/rules. The pressure to care for someone can feel impossible. Where there’s resistance, know that you need to step back and accommodate outside rules and your focus. It will be uncomfortable, but necessary.
