Midwinter

I find myself fogbound in North Yorkshire on this Solstice Eve. Sound is muffled. Time and space are a mystery. The Sun is invisible, beyond the pale. It could be any time of day. Space indefinable: is the bent hawthorn near or far in the white? It is all still. At this most magical time, […]

December Horoscopes

There’s a huge change coming our way this December — and it’s about time too. We are whooshing forward into 2021 — and into the next decade, as we enter a brand new era. It’s very exciting, and the new birth happens exactly on the Solstice point! It’s also a fiery month ahead, with […]

Solstice: All Yellow

Happy Solstice to you! May the Sun shine brightly on all your endeavours. In astrology, associations often depend on your source. Yellow, for example, is attributed to Mercury, Venus or the Sun; Virgo, Leo, Gemini (a yellowish green), Libra or Aquarius — depending on which book you pull off your shelf. There’s a table of Western colour attribution by planet and sign over at Skyscript, showing how astrologers have had wildly different ideas on the subject. One thing is certain though — colour is important to our psyches. “Colour is a power which directly influences the soul. Colour is the keyboard, […]

Astrology of Now: Solstice

“Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.” — CS Lewis The Sun, our own mighty star, enters the Cardinal sign of the Goat-Fish tomorrow just before 4.30pm GMT on December 21, and so we enter deep winter. This is the Solstice — the longest night and shortest days. And this one is special because the old teacher, Saturn, has returned to his home sign for the first time since 1991, and he greets the Sun at 0° Capricorn. As I mentioned in my previous post, this has not happened since 1664, so this Solstice holds a […]

Solstice Blessings

It’s true the world around us is in upheaval. We are in a time of transition, with all the dangers, obstacles and dramas which that entails. And astrologically on this Solstice we can expect the collective emotional temperature to be turned up to boiling point — (with Mars and the Sun in Cancer soon to oppose Pluto in Capricorn square Jupiter in Libra and finally Uranus in Aries.) This summer is already too hot. However, within this maelstrom, there are some outstanding positives on which to focus here at the turning point of summer. The shape of the planets on this day […]

A Street Called Hope

The shortest day of the year unfolded, unintentionally, as a meditation on our connection to God via a city break in Liverpool. In the morning, we went to the great hulking Anglican cathedral — which lours over the city from a high point overlooking the River Mersey and the Irish Sea. The longest cathedral in the world looks more like a power station than a house of god from the outside. Over the entrance, there’s a sculpture by Elizabeth Frink: a thick-limbed, stolid, “human” Christ. Inside its massy walls, the force of a kind of muscular Christianity is astonishingly real. Designed at the height of British […]
