Jupiter’s Libra ingress happens on September 9th. The planet of optimism and faith, in the sign of relationships and social grace, will whip up a frothy confection of social ideals. Libra likes everything to be pretty, and Jupiter’s shot of expansion will probably create some exaggerated displays of romance and rosy appearances. There are benefits to this – celebrations, increased sociability, marriage proposals and fun with the social dance. Jupiter in an Air sign can buoy you up and up, which will be a nice antidote to heavy times.

Jupiter’s tendency to exaggerate can also tip the Libra balance, so it will be easy to overdo the people-pleasing bit. If there are real problems in a relationship, you may gloss over them. Fine for this transit, but watch out when Jupiter enters Scorpio. The point is, this should be an enjoyable transit, but don’t ignore any simmering issues. This is prime time to address the difficult stuff, because compromise will be encouraged.

Fairness, ethics and honesty will be big deals. But whether these things are enhanced or falsified is another story. Jupiter expands everything, so if there is potential for half-truths, shallowness, denial and philandering, that could be a problem. It may not be visible right away, because Jupiter will crank up Libra’s gloss, so you’re blinded by the shine of the “perfect” relationship or partner. But if you’re starting off with honesty and the highest intentions, Jupiter will make it easy for you. Easy to be fair and impartial. Easy to see where the other person is coming from.

Use this time to increase your objective awareness. How do your wants line up with your partner/potential partner? How does your behaviour impact others? Jupiter can give you perspective, allowing you to step back from what you’ve been projecting (or what’s been projected on to you). You could gain a whole new appreciation of the social dance, while having a bit of fun.

A few words about Jupiter’s “promises”: there are none. It’s become almost taboo to suggest that a Jupiter transit might bring something good, because some people experience nothing, or they get hit with ugly events. Then they read about Jupiter’s positives, and they feel betrayed.

There are two things to be aware of:

1) Jupiter brings potential, not guarantees. This transit can bring social (Libra) growth and exploration (Jupiter). Big relationships. Expansion of an existing relationship. If you’re stuck in a negative mindset, you will miss this potential. If you refuse to change anything about the way you relate to others, you will miss this potential.

2) Jupiter can expand negative issues. Sorry – it happens. If something blows up during a Jupiter transit, it’s not because you were cheated. It’s just Jupiter. And, there are always other transits in play.

Jupiter will leave Libra for Scorpio on October 10th, 2017.

Mercury Retrograde in Virgo: Selecting The Best

Mercury stations retrograde in Virgo on August 30th, at 29 degrees. As mentioned in this post, Mercury’s Rx will be connected to Venus’ Libra ingress. The Mercury/Venus conjunction in Virgo on August 29th will weave positive new threads into the story. You may hear what you want to hear, or learn something valuable. Helpful suggestions can be delivered with love and the best intentions. But Mercury pausing at the last degree of Virgo suggests gathering all the information and still needing to review the facts. There will be missed details, or corrections that were overlooked.

The story will not be complete.

A notable point in this Mercury Rx is its conjunction with Jupiter (28 degrees) on September 2nd. This will be the second of two conjunctions .The first occurred on August 22nd, along with the Sun’s Virgo ingress. This entire Virgo season has a sub-theme of doing more with what you know, and maximizing the information you’re gathering. Meaning, you’re not just frantically amassing as much intel as you can. You’re using facts (Mercury) and intuition (Jupiter) to identify what will work best for you. And, you’re looking for the truth. The first Mercury/Jupiter conjunction was about more details. The second conjunction (with Mercury Rx) will be about sifting through the excess and selecting the smartest, healthiest, most effective bits. What makes sense. There’s no way you’re going to settle for anything less than the best. Mercury Rx won’t allow it.

Mercury will station direct on September 22nd (at 14 degrees). On September 20th, Mercury Rx will trine Pluto Rx in Capricorn, and on September 23rd Mercury direct will trine Pluto Rx in Capricorn (at 14 degrees). September 20th to 23rd will feature a compulsive focus on one, particular detail. Pluto will intensify Mercury’s analysis, and the change from Rx to direct suggests an answer/breakthrough which arises from going over and over and over (and over) one issue. Virgo’s obsessive attention to what’s broken can pay big dividends. Note that Venus will enter Scorpio (ruled by Pluto) on September 23rd, so there’s your conclusion to the story that began on August 29th. The deeper look at the absolute truth (involving money, relationships or values) may or may not reveal what you hoped for, but you’ll know exactly what you have to work with.

As always with Mercury Rx, make sure you have a backup plan. Some answers will be delayed, some fine print will be overlooked. There will be a need for corrections. You may have to prove your point and ask the same question, more than once. The ultimate goal is to get it right, and this probably won’t happen the first time. So dig in and be prepared to work.

Virgo season begins on August 22nd. The Sun joins Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and the North Node. This brings the energy to a peak (in the Virgo section of your chart) that will last until August 29th (when Venus enters Libra).

Correct, improve, refine, worry, criticize, analyze. Spot the flaw. Make it better. This can be your ultimate upgrade, or your struggle in the intricate web of anxiety. When Virgo is strongly activated, it’s helpful to focus smart. Focus on what you can change, only change what matters, and tune out the useless details/worries that drain your energy.

Virgo is about discrimination and order. Wrestling with chaos, whittling it down to the essentials and presenting a clean, sharp, useful result. There will always be chaos, and trying to tackle it all guarantees failure (and a migraine). This is why Virgo is most effective with small adjustments and immediate issues. During this ultra-intense Virgo season, just take care of what you can. Focus on doing the most essential things really well, and don’t worry about the rest.

This season, the big deals hitting Virgo are:

This is a lot for a sign that’s compelled to wrestle order out of chaos. There will be slippage, there will be mistakes. You’ll miss something. You just can’t nail it all down with this mix of energies. But you can learn to let go of what’s beyond your control, and you can develop a quality that Virgo doesn’t always have: faith. Yes, this will be your test to not assume the worst. You’ll have to do the work, of course. There’s something that you need to upgrade: your health, your self-esteem, your relationship, your______. Something needs to be purified. But as I wrote earlier, the key will be focusing in the right area, and not getting distracted by the minutia of what’s beyond your control.

Here’s something hopeful: Mercury (Virgo’s ruler) will be making its first of two conjunctions to Jupiter (at 26 degrees). More (Jupiter) details (Virgo), but more in a good way. Your knowledge will expand. Mercury/Jupiter puts you on track to the make the best decision, or say the right thing. Intuition is blended with logic. It’s an encouraging way to begin this tumultuous Virgo season. It means you’ll have all the tools you need. This conjunction also ties in with the September 1st eclipse.

Here are the aspects the Sun in Virgo will make:

  • Aug 28th: trine Ceres, 3 deg Taurus
  • Sept 1st: New Moon eclipse, 9 deg
  • Sep 1st: sextile Juno, 10 deg Scorpio
  • Sep 1st: square to Saturn, 10 deg Sag
  • Sep 2nd: opposition to Neptune Rx, 10 deg Pisces
  • Sep 3rd: sextile Black Moon Lilith, 11 deg Scorpio
  • Sep 4th: conjoins North Node, 12 deg
  • Sep 7th: trine Pluto Rx, 15 deg Capricorn
  • Sep 9th: sextile Vesta, 17 deg Cancer
  • Sep 12th: conjoins Mercury Rx, 20 deg
  • Sep 13th: square Mars, 21 deg Sag
  • Sep 14th: inconjunct Pallas Rx, 22 deg Aquarius
  • Sep 15th: opposite Chiron Rx, 22 deg Pisces
  • Sep 15th: inconjunct Uranus Rx, 23 deg Aries
  • Sep 16th: Full Moon eclipse, 24 deg Pisces
  • Sep 22nd: Libra ingress

The Shooting of Philando Castile

Diamond Reynolds live-streamed the immediate aftermath of her boyfriend’s murder by a police officer in St Paul, Minnesota on Wednesday. Her powerful testimony during the filming, and at an impromptu press conference the following day is so compelling, so passionate, so pure. If words can change the course of events, these ones will. “I want justice. I want peace.” There are moments, rarely captured on film, when the gods speak through one person. One of those moments was surely yesterday, and that person was Diamond Reynolds. She was anguished about the death of her beloved, but she was speaking for something much, […]

Thoughts on Transitory Mercury

Mercury, messenger of the gods, will be crossing the face of the Sun in a few hours.  You’ll be able to see this from Earth — with the right equipment. This particular event is not rare — but it is unusual. It happens about 14 times per century — and it’s always in Taurus or Scorpio — two of the fixed signs, the bull and the eagle. This transit across the face of the Sun also happens within a narrow timeframe (5-14 Nov and 5-12 May). It’s a Mercury-Sun conjunction, of course, and traditionally, there’s a point at which Mercury is super-powered (cazimi) before […]

Jupiter enters Virgo: The Party’s Over

Despite its reputation as astrology’s most generous benefactor, Jupiter’s gifts are often best enjoyed in hindsight. When Jupiter is moving through a sign, a house, or in aspect to one of your natal planets, you can actually feel quite a lot of pressure – to live bigger, be more daring, and challenge your limitations..
