Last night, the UK Parliament voted in favour of bombing ISIS in Syria (10.16pm, December 2, London.). And in so doing they showed what democracy is about. There were passionate, well-argued speeches on both sides — but not by either leader. Both Cameron and Corbyn seemed lightweight and political in comparison to Alec Salmond, David Davis and Caroline Lucas against the airstrikes, Margaret Beckett and Dan Jarvis for the strikes, and above all shadow foreign secretary Hilary Benn, in favour of air-strikes and against his own leader’s position. The motto of the city of Paris is Fluctuat nec migrator. It’s on the coat of arms. It means something like “tossed but not sunk”. If you didn’t believe in the power of astrological symbols before, you should now. The chart I use for the Republic of Turkey is set for the declaration of the Turkish Republic in 1923, absurdly recent for a country with such a long history, but as you can see from the transits to the chart below, accurate. On Saturday, two bombs ripped apart a peace demonstration in Ankara, the Turkish capital, killing more than 90 people and hospitalising dozens. A few months ago I published a chart for ISIS which I’d picked up at the British Astrological Association Conference on the understanding that it had been drawn up by Professor Geoffrey Cornelius. The Mighty Pen, Symbol of Reason

Twelve people at the offices of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo were gunned down on January 7. In the same week, Saudi blogger Raif Badawi received the first 50 lashes of his 1000-lash sentence for blasphemy, ironically, an echo of the Charlie Hebdo cover that caused such offense in 2011 — “1000 lashes if you don’t die laughing”. Charlie Hebdo

Today 12 people were gunned down in a magazine office in Paris. Charlie Hebdo is a well-known satirical magazine, the equivalent of, say, Private Eye or National Lampoon. Two, or maybe three, murderers shouted Arabic slogans as they left the building. Charlie Hebdo has a history of pissing Islamists off, so it’s assumed that this is yet another attack on Europe by fundamentalist muslims. Not only was the news this morning sad, it was troubling, horrifying, grotesque, macabre — satanic even. I’m referring to the murder of the American hostage Abdul-Rahman Kassig and 18 unnamed Syrian troops by Islamic State. All were gruesomely killed for the camera, and the video was posted on-line.
