The Hyades star cluster is in the face of Taurus the bull, spanning 5 to 9 degrees Gemini. Some include Aldebaran here, but really he is separate from the rest of the cluster and needs to be read separately also. The Hyades themselves cluster around the left eye of the Bull and the face. Ain is the star in the eye, but Prima Hyadum is the alpha star of the Hyades which has separate interpretations for the planets listed below. For Hyades as a whole Manilus writes: “The Hyades are a stormy star group and was regarded as a separate constellation. Those born at this time take no pleasure in tranquillity and set no store by a life of inaction; rather they yearn for crowds and mobs and civil disorders. Sedition and uproar delight them” [1] Generally Robsons interpretations for the Hyades are much harsher than those of Aldebaran. It is interesting that Robson himself has both his Sun and Midheaven in the Hyades. However Robson’s personal life is a mystery, so we have no way of knowing if he based his conclusions on himself. He says the Hyades; “give tears, sudden events, violence, fierceness, poisoning, blindness, wounds or injuries to […]

Noctua the Owl
The small constellation Noctua spans just five degrees between 15 and 20 Scorpio. Noctua is the species name of the Little Owl, Athene noctua. The genus name comes from Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom. Athena’s Owl was called Glaucus, Greek for “glaring“. The Little Owl does have a stern expression. Glaucus sat on Athena’s blind side so that she could see the whole truth. The owl can turn it’s head right round, looking behind to find the truth through hindsight. The German philosopher Georg Hegel referred to Glaucus to explain his idea that philosophical understanding can only come from hindsight: “the owl of Minerva spreads its wings only with the falling of the dusk“. Minerva is the Roman equivalent of Athena (asteroid Pallas Athena). In astrology, the constellation Noctua is fortunate, giving honor and ambition. Owls are are vigilant predators and this comes through as a killer instinct, fixity of purpose and steely determination. Wisdom, both spiritual and intellectual, comes through contemplation of their experiences. Margaret Thatcher (Noctua rising) once said “The wisdom of hindsight, so useful to historians and indeed to authors of memoirs, is sadly denied to practicing politicians”. The literary genius Johan Wolfgang Goethe also had Noctua […]
Fixed Star Unukalhai
The brightest star in constellation Serpens the Snake is Unukalhai, located at 22º Scorpio. Sometimes it is called Cor Serpentis, meaning the Serpent’s Heart. It’s a 2nd magnitude, pale yellow star found in the snakes neck. According to Ptolemy, the stars of constellation Serpens are of a Saturn Mars nature, which of course in traditional terms means an arch-villain. Robson suggests that they give “wisdom, craft, deceit, malice, a feeble will and danger of poison.”[2] The main problem is the risk of poisoning, or intoxication through drugs or alcohol. It doesn’t necessarily mean the subject will be a drug addict, rather that these people are unusually sensitive to toxins and suffer more than most when exposed to smoke, heavy metals, chemicals and alcohol. Some people do crave the very thing that they are allergic to however giving us a fatal attraction. This star seems to have an extremely hypnotic effect then, drawing you in with its undulating vibration. Robson has an extremely negative view of it. He associates it primarily with violence and poisoning with a crafty, criminal and immoral subtext. 1930’s gentleman Vivian Robson (Yes, he was a man) used the term “evil environment” to politely imply a gay […]

Fixed Star Facies
The fixed star Facies is actually a very faint cluster of stars (M22) in the constellation Sagittarius. Currently (2012) positioned at 08°28′ Capricorn, it sits in front of the face of the Archer. Astrologers have generally considered Facies to have an unfortunate influence, associated with eye problems, accidents and violence. There is some evidence to support these interpretations but it is not the whole story at all. Being in the constellation Sagittarius, Facies has a Jupiter nature giving interest in religion, politics, philosophy, travel, and expressing the self through publishing or producing something, literature or film. Facies also shows the nature of Pluto which gives a psychological, probing, intense, profound nature, with some association to the dark side of life. Other Astrologers on the Influence of Facies Vivian Robson gave it the nature of Sun and Mars: “Fearless, in tolerant, warlike skill, over-confident, fierce, cruel, vindictive, energetic organizer, danger to the eyes, accidents, violent death.” Being a nebula, he also lists “Blindness, disease, accidents, fevers, quarrels, rape, murder, banishment and decapitation.” Dr. Eric Morse acknowledges the more unfortunate Mars nature of this star, but found that Facies “symbolizes well that kind of Sagittarian who goes out to climb mountains, race cars, […]
How To Use Fixed Stars
How does one use fixed stars in the birthchart? There are two methods nowadays. 1) The fixed stars longitude method on the ecliptic or 2) The visual astrology of parans. The ecliptic is the path the Sun takes to travel around the earth, and it comprises the 360 degrees of the zodiac. The use of fixed stars in astrology goes back thousands of years, but since many of the important books were probably burnt in the fire of the great library in Alexandra we will never really know how fixed stars in astrology were really used astrologically as opposed to astronomically.
