October 22: Full Moon in Aries
Whenever the Moon is full it sits exactly opposite the Sun. That’s how we get the beautiful inter-play between Light and Shadow. It’s a time of manifestation and illumination; whatever is out of balance (Sun in Libra) now is revealed so that action (Moon in Aries) can be taken to modify or correct the situation.
Considering today offers up a big fat Full Moon in me-oriented Aries, this day is much calmer than was yesterday. That’s partly because the Moon has lost some of her steam by now, sitting as she is on the very last degree of Aries. That twenty-ninth degree is symbolic of a cosmic test: mastering the art of being true to yourself (Moon in Aries) without losing sight of the fact that there are billions of other selves (Sun in Libra) populating our world – and each one has a role to play in the unfolding cosmic Mystery.
Cosmic lovers Venus and Mars are the guardians of this Full Moon, and it’s interesting to note that they’re both occupying the sign of penetrating Scorpio. This speaks to me of a quiet unity buried in the heart of this Sun-Moon opposition. Rather than default to knee-jerk reactions (which can be a shadow trait of the cardinal energy operating through Aries and Libra), Venus retrograde and Mars invite us to delve deeper into Scorpio’s waters, in search of a more beneficial response to what will surely present itself as a familiar situation.
I refer to a familiar situation because this is actually a Blue Moon; it’s the second Full Moon in a row that we’ve had in Aries. So there’s likely to be a Groundhog Day feel in the air, some kind of hangover from the previous Full Moon. This gives us another shot at walking that fine line between honouring the needs of the Self without pushing it into ego-driven behaviour. At the same time, the Sun sits on Libra’s last degree as a poignant reminder that you serve no one by abandoning your needs in favour of everyone else’s. Libra energy teaches us that there needs to be an awareness of Self if we are to relate to others in meaningful and authentic ways.
Might this Full Moon offer an entirely new meaning of what it is to be self-centred? Since Libra and its ruler Venus are intimately connected with love I can pray that Love floods each heart, just as this Aries Moon floods the night with Light. And perhaps self-centredness will become synonymous with heartful self-awareness.
