October 27: Mercury in Scorpio
Now that Mercury has moved into Scorpio’s realm, he takes on extra responsibilities. Always the overseer of all communications, Mercury will now add Guide of Soles to his job description for the next two-and-a-half weeks. Scorpio represents the Underworld – both as a metaphor for the portion of your psyche that recycles old worn-out bits, and as a destination for souls in transition from this plane of existence to the next. Mercury is the guide who helps people cross over to the Underworld when they die. Perhaps it’s just anecdotal, but I do hear about a preponderance of deaths at this time of year when Scorpio energy rises to the fore. As I mentioned in October 24’s post, “Get ready for a voyage down the River Styx.”
On another level, it’s not just people that pass away; so do ideas – which are associated with Mercury. So do thought-forms and beliefs or attitudes. This is echoed by Jupiter (beliefs) and Uranus (Mercury’s higher octave) in the latter degrees of Pisces. Moreoever, Mercury is conjunct Venus retrograde, which points to re-framing our values and tastes. You may find yourself thinking with greater intensity about which aspects of your life and/or your psyche are withering on the vine. Everything has its season. Perhaps it’s a relationship that has run its course and needs to end. Likely there is something in your life that has signaled a need to be transformed from the decayed state it’s currently in, to one that helps you soar on the next leg of your journey. Part of Mercury’s task, while in Scorpio, is to help you flush that out. What are you ready to let go of?
