What it actually is
Relationship astrology is not about compatibility
The word compatibility has done more damage to relationship astrology than almost anything else. It suggests that two people either fit together or they do not — that there is a right answer somewhere in the planets, and if you can just find it, you will know whether to stay or go.
Dawn Bodrogi spent 25 years arguing the opposite. A relationship chart is not a verdict. It is a map — a precise, detailed map of the structural forces at work between two people. Where the energy flows easily. Where it creates friction. What the friction is asking you to do. What the easy flow might be hiding.
Relationship astrology done properly is not about whether two people are compatible. It is about what a specific connection is here to do — what it is capable of building, what wounds it will reopen, what growth it is structured to produce.
“A relationship is not a fixed thing. It is a living process — and what the chart shows you is the nature of that process, not its outcome.”
— Dawn Bodrogi, The Inner Wheel
The foundation
Synastry — the conversation between two charts
Synastry is the primary tool of relationship astrology. It works by overlaying two natal charts and examining how the planets in one chart aspect the planets in the other. Every aspect — every conjunction, square, trine, opposition, sextile — creates a specific dynamic between the two people.
What synastry reveals is not whether two people love each other. It reveals the structural conditions under which that love operates. Two charts with Saturn squaring Venus will experience love differently than two charts with Venus conjunct Venus — not better or worse, but differently, with different demands and different gifts.
Dawn’s framework for synastry began with a simple premise: every contact between charts is purposeful. Even the difficult ones. Especially the difficult ones. The question is not whether a square is good or bad, but what it is asking the people involved to develop.
Conjunctions
Where two planets merge — intensity, fusion, and the dissolution of the boundary between two people. The most powerful contacts in synastry, for better or worse.
Squares
Where two planets create friction — the aspects that demand the most work but often produce the deepest growth. Dawn called them the load-bearing walls of a relationship.
Trines and sextiles
Where energy flows easily between two people. Supportive and comfortable — but comfort without challenge rarely produces transformation.
Oppositions
Where two people mirror each other across an axis — the aspect of projection, of seeing yourself in the other person, and of being forced to integrate what you see.
What to look for
The aspects that matter most in relationship astrology
Saturn contacts
Saturn contacts between charts are the structural backbone of a long-term relationship. When one person’s Saturn aspects the other’s personal planets — Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars — it creates a relationship with weight, with seriousness, with a sense of obligation and accountability. These are not easy contacts. They are load-bearing ones.
A Saturn square in synastry does not mean the relationship is doomed. It means it requires something. It will ask both people to grow up in specific ways — and the areas of growth are precisely described by which planets are involved.
Venus and Mars
Venus and Mars contacts describe the current of desire and attraction between two people. They explain the pull — why this particular person, why this particular chemistry. A Venus conjunct Mars in synastry creates an almost magnetic draw. A Venus square Mars creates friction that is often electric in the early stages of a relationship and demanding later on.
The Moon
Moon contacts tell you about emotional compatibility in the deepest sense — whether two people feel safe with each other, whether they can meet each other’s emotional needs, whether their instinctive responses to the world align or clash. The Moon is where we live when no one is watching. Its contacts in synastry reveal whether two people can truly inhabit the same emotional space.
Chiron
Chiron contacts in synastry are among the most significant and least discussed. When one person’s Chiron aspects another’s personal planets, the relationship will touch the wound — the core vulnerability that Chiron represents. This can be healing. It is often painful. It is always meaningful.
The Lunar Nodes
Node contacts in synastry carry the weight of destiny — or what feels like destiny. When one person’s planet falls on the other’s North or South Node, the sense of recognition is immediate and profound. The South Node brings familiarity, the feeling of picking up where you left off. The North Node pulls you forward, toward growth that feels both necessary and threatening.

The relationship itself
The composite chart — the third entity
Synastry shows how two people affect each other. The composite chart shows something different: it describes the relationship itself as a separate entity, with its own character, its own strengths, its own vulnerabilities.
The composite is calculated by finding the midpoint between each pair of planets in the two natal charts. The result is a chart that belongs to neither person — it belongs to the space between them. To what they create together.
A composite chart with the Sun in the 7th house describes a relationship that is fundamentally oriented toward partnership — where the relationship itself is the point. A composite Moon in the 12th house describes a relationship with a hidden emotional life, where the deepest feelings circulate beneath the surface. The composite chart reads like a natal chart, but its subject is the bond itself.
Dawn’s approach was to read synastry and the composite together — using synastry to understand the dynamic between the people, and the composite to understand the nature and purpose of the connection. They answer different questions, and both are necessary for a complete picture.
The methodology
Dawn Bodrogi’s approach to relationship astrology
Dawn Bodrogi came to relationship astrology from a background in dramatic structure. Before she was an astrologer, she was Head of Script Development for London Weekend Television Drama, working directly with Arthur Miller, Harold Pinter, and Tom Stoppard. She understood narrative — the way characters reveal themselves through pressure, the way relationships are defined not by what is easy but by what is difficult.
She brought that understanding to synastry. Where most relationship astrology looked for compatibility, Dawn looked for structure. What is this relationship built on? What can it bear? What is it asking of the people in it?
Her framework was psychological and precise. She took seriously the idea that difficult aspects in synastry are not obstacles to happiness but invitations to development — that a Saturn square Venus is not a sign that two people should not be together, but a sign that love in this relationship will be taught something.
“The chart doesn’t tell you what will happen. It tells you what kind of ground you are standing on — and what you will need to grow there.”
— Dawn Bodrogi, The Inner Wheel
Dawn died in 2017. The Inner Wheel continues her work — carrying her methodology forward, applying it to the reports and content on this site, and making her framework available to anyone who wants to understand their relationships at the structural level she described.
Relationship astrology reports
Understanding your specific connection
The most valuable thing relationship astrology can do is look at two specific charts — not two Sun signs, not two archetypes, but the exact planetary positions at the exact moments two people were born — and describe what those charts create when they meet.
That is what The Inner Wheel’s relationship astrology reports do. They apply Dawn’s framework to your charts, producing an interpretation that could not have been written for anyone else.

Questions
Frequently asked questions about relationship astrology
What is relationship astrology?
Relationship astrology is the study of how two natal charts interact — the aspects between them, the houses they activate in each other’s charts, and what those structural conditions mean for the people involved. It is distinct from sun sign compatibility in that it works with the full complexity of both charts rather than reducing people to twelve categories.
What is the difference between synastry and a composite chart?
Synastry examines how two people’s planets interact — the dynamic between the individuals. The composite chart is a separate chart calculated from the midpoints of both charts, describing the relationship itself as a distinct entity with its own character and purpose. Both are used in relationship astrology and answer different questions.
Can relationship astrology tell me if this person is right for me?
No — and any astrologer who claims it can is misrepresenting what astrology does. What relationship astrology can tell you is the structural nature of the connection: what it is built on, what it will demand, what kind of growth it is capable of producing. The question of whether someone is right for you is one only you can answer — but the chart can give you the clearest possible picture of what you are working with.
Does relationship astrology work for non-romantic relationships?
Yes. Synastry describes the dynamic between any two people — parents and children, friends, colleagues, business partners. The planetary contacts are the same regardless of the nature of the relationship. What changes is the context in which those contacts express themselves.
What do I need for a synastry reading?
Birth date, birth time, and birth place for both people. The birth time is particularly important — the Ascendant changes approximately every two hours, and the house placements that govern which areas of life are activated by synastry contacts depend on an accurate birth time. If you do not have an exact time, an approximate time will still produce a meaningful reading.
How is The Inner Wheel’s approach to relationship astrology different?
The Inner Wheel applies the methodology Dawn Bodrogi developed over 25 years of practice — a structural, psychologically rigorous approach that treats difficult aspects as invitations rather than obstacles, and reads each chart as a unique architectural system rather than a collection of isolated placements. Every report is written fresh for the specific charts involved. Nothing is templated.
