Mars and Venus in Synastry: The Engine of Desire and Lasting Love

Mars and Venus in Synastry: The Engine of Desire and Lasting Love

I started writing about Mars in synastry here. I told myself I wouldn’t do what’s been done in other places. Descriptions of Mars and Venus were at the top of my list. However, I’ve found interesting things in my synastry consultations. People are often confused about how both Venus and Mars operate, particularly their different functions for each sex. We all have Venus and we all have Mars. On one level, they operate the same way. But subtle differences influence each sex uniquely.

Mars: The Hypersensitive Warrior’s Role

Mars is notoriously hypersensitive. Regardless of its sign or aspects, it feels everything. Alas, this doesn’t help relationships much. Mars is not sensitive about others; in fact, it can be extremely insensitive. Yet Mars is always intensely sensitive to ITSELF. This is the Aries factor. Aries can be rude, overbearing, or arrogant to others, but it becomes as hypersensitive as the most acute Pisces when it comes to itself. When you encounter an Aries/Pisces combo, you often find the world’s most hypersensitive bulldozer. This likely happens because, like a newborn baby, Aries has no defenses. It’s just out there on its own, in the line of fire. It is brave, but it knows its vulnerability, which also roots Aries’ legendary love of innocent and vulnerable things, including children, kittens, and the needy.

Mars shows us what stimulates us. The houses reveal the area of life where we connect with our basic energy. Signs show us the flavors of our expression and what we find exciting. When we tap into it, we access our own life force. On an angle, Mars exerts particular force, even when retrograde. Mars in synastry with the Descendant feels stimulated by partnership, often desiring to discover and express the shadow side. And Mars conjunct the IC explores inner landscapes, stimulated by issues of home and family. Mars on the MC acts as a natural hunter, finding expression in career and social issues. Unless there’s heavy water house influence, it seeks visible achievement.

The Evolving Dance of Venus and Mars in Relationships

I observe less and less in synastry charts the traditional pattern where one partner embodies Sun/Mars and the other Venus/Moon. These relationships, common in our parents’ generations, saw men taking active, external roles while women governed internal dynamics, home, and family. Even if partners now choose traditional roles, a greater balance of expression exists; one partner no longer simply ‘lives out’ the opposite energy of the other. This represents a huge, often unappreciated, cultural and psychological shift, illustrating how the changing dynamics of Venus and Mars manifest in charts and in the world.

Mars drives our sexual aggression and how we offer and display ourselves. Venus, conversely, governs how we wish to receive love, regardless of sex. It was once thought that Venus dictated how women displayed their sexuality and Mars how men displayed theirs. I no longer believe this applies; the dynamic has become much more complicated. A woman with Venus in Cancer will woo by nurturing, while a man with Venus in Cancer will want nurturing. Mars/Mars in compatible signs indicates aligned styles of loving, but Venus determines whether that love feels appreciated. Simply put, Venus shows how both sexes wish to receive love, and Mars reveals how we express sexual energy.

Understanding Venus: Desire, Worth, and Creation

We cannot achieve true inspiration without Mars. When genuinely inspired, we are set in motion. When Mars’s spiritual side activates, it becomes a vehicle for higher powers. We often forget Mars was a god with a role in life’s divine comedy. Sexually, Mars spans from basic physical satisfaction to sacred union.

When analyzing Mars in synastry, the connection with Venus provides a vital key to understanding a couple’s desires. Interactions between Mars and Venus in a chart, even challenging aspects, are invaluable. When they connect, we more easily align our real values with our energy and achievements. Without Mars-Venus contacts, we might not understand our basic desires or how to fuel our ambition with them. With these contacts, our actions feel more organic to our being.

Healthy Venusian expression requires a robust sense of self-worth. We must recognize what we offer another and value that offering. If this is lacking, or if hard aspects to Saturn and beyond thwart Venus’s expression, achieving the self-worth necessary for healthy partnership becomes difficult.

  • Venus/Saturn often involves self-restriction, where ‘shoulds’ and ‘oughts’ take precedence.
  • Venus/Uranus frequently carries a wound from abrupt loss of worth.
  • Venus/Chiron often feels intrinsically flawed or unworthy of partnership.
  • Venus/Neptune struggles to recognize its own worth, seeking dissolution in fantasy rather than facing partnership’s realities.
  • Venus/Pluto alternates between wielding and lacking control, needing to learn proper power use and avoid abusing intimacy.

Venus wields a power unmatched by other planets. Planets act within the world; Venus can create it. The connecting power of Venusian love explains why esoteric astrology links Venus to Gemini. Esoterically, Venus establishes the vibration that creates the manifest world. Venus bridges the inner and outer, the unmanifest and manifest, and carries our experience of love through time. Once truly touched, we are forever altered. When we strip Venus of mundane desires, it becomes capable of anything. We are only just beginning to truly grasp the meaning of Mars in synastry for modern couples.
