The Divine Pull of Chiron in Synastry

This is an excerpt from my forthcoming ebook, “Beyond the Wound: Chiron in Synastry.” This section deals with typical patterns in Chiron-dominant relationships. You’ll recognize some of it if you’ve been reading this blog for a few years. Much of it is new.

The Divine Pull of Chiron in Synastry

When Chiron in synastry is prominent, we are drawn into a relationship with a powerful instinct. This is especially true if it makes conjunctions to relationship planets or hits an angle. We sense we are separated from the divine world and feel a strong need to heal that rift. We feel that something is missing in our lives, and we want it back now. While all relationships involve sensing the divine through another, only Chiron contacts whisper that elusive promise of spiritual completion.

We may not recognize Chiron’s pull as a desire to heal an inner rift at first. Instead, we sense that this particular relationship is the only thing that can make us feel whole again. It targets the place where we feel most empty, rejected, and forlorn. This is very seductive. The other person promises to become the vehicle for all the transforming powers of the universe. They are our personal conduit between the earth and the stars. This person will deliver the goods we never thought we could get.

The initial impetus with Chiron in synastry is deliverance: this person appeared in my life specifically to take me where I need to go. The implied thought is, ‘I don’t have to be hungry, inadequate, or rejected anymore. This relationship is the answer. The Struggle Bus stops here.’

Passion, Pain, and Inadvertent Wounds

Chiron contacts are powerful and passionate at first. They combine the promise of innate hungers fulfilled and innate flaws mended. There is also a physical, earthy element to Chiron that taps into his animal nature, making these contacts highly sexual. Like any planet, Chiron has his good and bad sides. These contacts indicate that a great deal of healing can be achieved. Just as Chiron illuminates our personal wounds, certain cosmic events can bring them to a head. A total lunar eclipse, or Blood Moon, can serve as a powerful catalyst for our deepest healing.

Unfortunately, the process involves hitting all our most sensitive, painful buttons while trying not to lose love for one another. Chiron in synastry can be a real test of the depth of feeling between two people because the hurt is usually inadvertent. It’s as if the contact says, “I’m not targeting you in a Plutonian way. I am constantly, accidentally, shredding your heart, because I can’t help it.” The cruelties expressed in Chiron’s name can be shocking. These connections can also be remarkably long-lived, depending on how much we have been taught to associate pain with love.

A Soul-Searing Cleanse for Spiritual Strength

What begins as a promise of wholeness often ends with a ruthless tearing. Real healing can only occur when whatever is festering inside is cleansed. Only then can a wound be closed. The experience of Chiron in synastry can feel like a medical procedure where a painful wound is re-opened so the poison can be burned out. Chiron-dominant relationships provide this soul-searing. Without this cleansing, we cannot have the inner balance that translates to spiritual strength. Whether or not a relationship can be salvaged, we are given a choice. We can move through the world as the limping, distorted god-in-exile, or we can take our newfound knowledge and negotiate our world with grace and strength, like the immortals we are.

There are some typical relationship patterns and signatures that are associated with Chiron in synastry.

Relationship Pattern 1: The Unequal and Inadequate

It is often the case with Chiron in synastry that one partner is more spiritually aware than the other. It is often this more aware partner who suffers the most. Chiron, the wise healer and teacher, is always pushing us towards the awareness of what is best in us and burning away what holds us back. This may sound Plutonian, but Pluto has a different agenda. Pluto wants us to lose the ego for a higher perspective.

The dynamic of Chiron in synastry places us smack in the middle of our own limitations. The ‘burn’ of the Chiron-carrying partner can be humiliation, shame, and self-abnegation. “I am not, nor will I ever be, good enough.” We chant this mantra so often that we fail to notice that the person we feel unworthy of is not fit to shine our shoes, spiritually speaking.

Unfortunately, the process is always painful. Unlike the pain of outer planet lessons, Chiron contacts hurt us exactly where we are most sensitive. If Chiron opposes our Moon and we have body image issues, our partner may be undeniably cruel in this respect. If Chiron is square to Mercury, our intelligence may be questioned. The keyword is transcendence. We are meant to get beyond this pain to learn the strength and compassion gained because of it.

In these relationships, Chiron often whispers the word ‘sacrifice’ in our ear, but we misunderstand. We are not being asked to sacrifice ourselves, but our attachment to the wound. The Chiron person will subjugate themselves over and over, only to be hit by the pain again. They make excuses, claiming the partner doesn’t realize the hurt they are causing.

Mistaking Potential for Reality

The sad truth is that the Chiron person sees the full potential of the relationship. Chiron’s shamanic gift allows them to see beyond the mundane to other levels of awareness. When Chiron is activated between charts, the planet person inadvertently fires up these abilities. This causes the Chiron person to see their partner for what they may become, not what they are. Chiron mistakes this potential for reality and relates to the planet person on this level.

This causes the planet person to begin to itch under the Chiron person’s scrutiny. They may feel inadequate, vulnerable, or in need of healing when they were fine before. The planet person ultimately wants to escape Chiron—imagine being scrutinized through the eyes of a god all the time. This can all sound very Neptunian, but Neptune’s blindness is a different breed. With Chiron in synastry, our blindness comes from a desperation to heal and be released from the pain of this world. It’s not based on self-deception but a deep need to belong.

When Chiron ultimately discovers the partner is blind to their own divinity, Chiron sets out to test it. The relationship can get very messy. At some point, the Chiron person may wake up and realize their partner may never be the person they imagined.

Relationship Pattern 2: The Student/Teacher Dynamic

Another common pattern of Chiron in synastry declares itself as a student/teacher dynamic. These can work well when the relationship is literally that of a student and teacher or between family members. In a romantic relationship, however, this dynamic has its limits. One party worships at the other’s feet while the receiver leads and guides.

At some point in a romantic scenario, the worshipper begins chafing at the bit. They have experienced the required growth and want to break free. The teacher’s instinct is to cling to the student to keep them dependent. Ultimately, the teacher will have to sacrifice their dominant position and let the student go, which can feel like a betrayal.

It becomes more complicated with the Svengali syndrome. Here, one person (usually the planet person) expresses the untapped talents of the other (the Chiron person). The Chiron person has a painful need to be seen and recognized, yet they must watch someone else live out what they believe is rightfully theirs.

Understanding the link to the sixth house is vital for interpreting Chiron in synastry. Chiron relationships are often dramatic, with great highs and lows, because so much is at stake. The sixth house is a house of crisis and testing, where we sort the chaff from the grain. Any planet here must be engaged in service. In the sixth house, we face our inadequacies and pull ourselves together. Chiron in relationships focuses on this dynamic to help us heal so we can serve from a position of strength.

Sometimes there is a literal illness that repeatedly affects the relationship. One party becomes ill, and the other steps in as the healer. If this is the case, there is a mutual need to recognize that true healing comes from within. As Leonard Cohen says, “There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” Accepting this lack of perfection is a large part of this dynamic.

The Ultimate Question: Who Inflicts the Wound?

The most common question asked about Chiron in synastry is: Who inflicts the hurt? The answer is, “both.” Much depends on what our pain has made of us. Has suffering made us wiser and more compassionate, or has it caused us to turn our backs on others? I have seen an unconscious Chiron wreak havoc, and I have seen a developed Chiron turn loss into enlightened contribution.

Chiron is a blessing. If it is not strong in our charts we may succeed, but we may never find our real purpose. Each Chiron relationship is a rehearsal for the ultimate relationship between our deepest inner being and the outer world. When our inner and outer worlds are in sync, we have contentment at the very least, and the possibility of joy. We have Chiron in synastry to thank for that.
