The positioning of the moon in composite chart brings us to the very essence of relationships. Most often, the Moon is thought of as representing our emotions and attachments—what makes us feel nurtured, secure, and comfortable. But the composite chart is a third entity, a chart of the relationship itself. So, how can this third thing, this new entity, claim to have its own emotional center? We can’t simply look to the composite Moon to see if a couple will get along. The Moon is so much more than that; it represents the deepest reasons two people have come together.
In traditional astrology, the Moon represents the body and our physical vulnerabilities. It’s where the psyche holds the memories of our physical existence and the awareness of our reactions to the world. It’s a massive bank account of our awareness, which is why it represents what comforts us. We are fed by what is familiar, even if that familiarity is difficult.
In a composite, it is common to assume that the Moon by sign and house shows the couple’s emotional habits and needs. When the moon in composite chart is very strong, it can cause us to seem to change personalities. This isn’t a false self; it’s a new horizon of growth within the relationship. The composite Moon is as strong as the Sun, but where the Sun shows the creative energy of the relationship, the Moon shows us where we have been together, what patterns we have had as a couple, and often, its habits trump the Sun’s urging forward.
The Moon & The South Node: A Karmic Echo
One of the quickest ways of telling whether a relationship ‘has been’ is by looking at the moon in composite chart and the condition of the South Node. There are many indicators of past-life relationships, but the Moon and the South Node together are the fastest way to get to the truth. The Moon itself reveals the pattern, while the Nodes indicate the resolution and growth of that pattern. The Moon and the Nodes will give you both the echoes of the past and the guiding whispers towards the future.
This is often a very private matter, which is why celebrity examples can fall flat. However, the tumultuous relationship between actress Carrie Fisher and musician Paul Simon offers a glimpse. In their composite chart, the Moon is in Gemini in the eighth house. Carrie herself confirmed the intimacy and seductive ability of that placement, saying the relationship began with “words, words, words, beautiful words, lovely words…” This intellectual connection was everything and is what drew them together.
The Dynamics of Power & Growth
While this Gemini Moon trined the Sun and other planets, it wasn’t strong enough to overcome the chart’s deepest patterns. The couple had a make-or-break dynamic that stemmed from their habitual behaviors and sensitivities. In this way, the moon in composite chart indicates deeply entrenched patterns that require an enormous amount of conscious awareness to overcome, which is precisely what the North Node and the Sun are for. This dynamic, and the possibility for growth, is the true essence of the composite chart.
