Continued from The Magical Earth: Unveiling the Mysticism of Astrology’s Earth Signs
I am not one of those who complains about having to share Mercury with Gemini. The mythological Mercury has many guises and Hermes has many roles to play. Mercury is behind pure thought, behind connection, behind communication, behind movement. Air Mercury, the Gemini Mercury, is the essential form of these functions. But what does Earth Mercury do? Remember those molecular vibrations? What sets them to buzzing? The magic of Virgo comes directly through the Earth Mercury—the magic of Virgo is the thought behind form. We cannot bring into being what we cannot conceive. We cannot create without first having thought. Where does the opposite sign come in?
In the Tarot, the Magician is associated with Virgo, and with the god Thoth. Thoth, the magician, rules writing itself. Writing is thought made form. Thought must be put into some form, either sound or some material form, in order to complete its mission of communication, to be useful.

Virgo cuts itself off from its creative power by losing imagination, by losing its ability to conceive/think conceptually. It’s symbol is not only a virgin, it is the pregnant Virgin, untouched, intact, whole within itself, carrying the god within. When the imaginative, rich, anything is possible world of Pisces is abandoned, Virgo finds itself degenerating into the sorter, the nitpicker, the analyzer. Without the purpose of creative expression, what is the point of sorting, nitpicking and analyzing for its own sake? This tumbling through the refuse of others’ creative efforts is often what leads Virgos to desperation and despair.
In the Tarot, Thoth the Magician is associated with Virgo. Thoth rules writing itself.
