Astrology Maven Alice O Howell

A well-read client reminded me this week of the work of Alice Howell, the grandmama of psychological astrology, Jungian scholar, poet, traveller and wise woman.  She passed on in 2014 but left a large body of work, including her blog Credo, which is still up on the internet and full of pearls of wisdom. Howell lived a long and eventful life and by the time she started writing her blog she had a wealth of experience to draw on. Here’s an example especially for those of you experiencing a Neptune transit or working in a therapeutic role. “…When I was 21, […]

Bowie Turns To Face The Strange

David Bowie must have known he was dying when he recorded ★ (Blackstar), his final album, released on his to birthday three days ago. It’s a privilege to hear from this liminal place, the place between this world and the next, from such a great artist and poetic visionary. The title song ★ is an apocalyptic vision, possibly a warning about the dark tides sweeping through the collective mind. The song Lazarus is about being dead. Can’t Give Everything Away, the final song on the album, sounds exactly like a swan song. In both the videos for his last album, Bowie is blindfolded. This is […]

One Night In Cologne

In the early hours of 2016, more than a 100 women were sexually assaulted by roaming gangs of men in the streets of the German city of Cologne. At least one was raped. At least 1000 men are said to have been involved in the organised attacks. It took five days for the media to catch up with the story. Cologne is a 2000-year old town on the banks of the River Rhine. It was smashed to pieces in World War 2 and as it rose from the rubble again, lovingly rebuilt in its own image, it became symbolic of the new, peaceful Europe, a […]

Astrology of Now: Focus and Healing

It’s an extraordinary — and rather difficult — start to 2016. But amidst the tumultuous energies there are some strong positives. Here’s the gen. Mercury is retrograde in Aquarius, then from January 8th, in Capricorn . The time calls for rethinking and practical reassessment. Mars is in Scorpio, his own sign. The planet of physical energy, libido and aggression, is especially strong here. The quality of Mars in Scorpio is active focus. This is about cutting out the cancers, honing in on what’s necessary. You can see it might work well with Mercury Retrograde. Check where Mars will be in your own chart. It’s […]

January Horoscopes 2016

Happy New Year! What an interesting month awaits us. It could be rather a sticky start to the year, with both Jupiter and Mercury turning retrograde while Uranus, the planet of electricity is surging ahead. One aspect that is especially interesting kicks off right at the start of the month and that is the conjunction of Jupiter, the planet of expansion with the North Node, the gateway of destiny. Now these two encounter each other about once a decade, but usually it’s a quick how’s your father and on they go. Not this year. Jupiter hangs around the North Node for […]

Merry Christmas!

Wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas. The Full Moon in Cancer tomorrow means emotions will be wide and deep. This is the Full Moon of the mother, appropriately for the Christmas story. There is also a nice trine between Mercury, the planet of talk, and Jupiter the planet of plenty, so you can expect a lot of conversation. Since both are in earth signs, the chat may be practical and useful. Indeed it may be a chance to resolve some real-life family conundrums. Finally, Uranus, the planet of the unexpected, turns direct on Boxing Day. This is especially […]

Solstice Greetings

Velvety magic at the winter solstice. Light of the Sun swallowed, we spend a long night of darkness, but there is comfort in the night’s embrace. Even in these modern times, we can turn out the electric lights and gather round the fire, letting the dark cushion our backs. We are in a womb with walls woven of stories and histories, feelings and ideas, memories and dreams. We bind together in this Capricorn time, through our traditions — invented and evolving — and this year, the Full Moon on Christmas Day, will bind more tightly ties of blood or emotion. This is a tribal time. […]

The Three Biggest Opportunities in 2016 For Each Sign

My chum UK astrologer Sally Kirkman has written a forecast book for the whole of 2016 — it’s 150 pages of info.  Sally is a Scorpio so she’s good at cutting to the point. Here’s an extract. The 3 Biggest Opportunities Coming Your Way In 2016 Aries Living out your ideology, following your faith and being true to your philosophy and beliefs is a life-changer in 2016. New healthy habits awaken the mantra that your body’s a temple and boosts brain power. Love is in the ascendancy from September when Jupiter promises wedding bells, a proposal and more. An Astrologer’s Christmas Stocking

I’ve been scouring the internet for some interesting, beautiful or at least audacious gifts for the astrologer in your life — or the astrologically inclined. Karl Stockhausen, the German composer of rather intellectual modern music, created 12 music boxes — one for each sign — back in the early 1970s. The “tunes” he came up with went on to inform his work for the next few decades. These music boxes are periodically re-issued. To hear them, click here. To buy one, click here.   While you’re listening to your music box, you’ll need to swill some whisky. To buy these glasses […]
