Kesha’s Saturn Return

Los Angeles will eat you. The LA music biz specialises in packaging young girls into pop stars — Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Nicky Minaj, Miley Cyrus, Britney Spears. The singer-songwriter Kesha is one of those. Spotted by producer Dr Luke at the age of 17,  she was persuaded by him to drop out of high school and move to LA. But it was not until 2010, that Kesha, autotuned and “sexified”, had a hit with a song she wrote, Tik Tok, and the subsequent album, Animal. Her second album Warrior was just as successful — as were her tours. The persona she […]

In The Key Of Pisces: Answers To Pavane

Sviatoslav Richter is the Pisces at the slowest tempo. Richter has Mercury, Mars and Jupiter in a tight stellium in Pisces. Taurus Moon. Samson Francois has a Taurus Sun with Venus-Pluto conjunction in Cancer training his Scorpio Moon which opposes the Sun — emotionally intense and rather dark. His Moon is exactly opposite Richter’s and possibly Simon’s. Abbey Simon has Sun in Capricorn flanked widely by Mercury and Venus in the same sign. Venus opposes Pluto in Cancer. Moon is in Taurus — again. It’s an interesting chart, very well distributed planets.

In The Key Of Pisces: Maurice Ravel & An Astro-Musical Quiz

The composer, Maurice Ravel, was born on March 7, 1875 into a musical family in the town of Ciboure, where the River Nivelle meets the Atlantic Ocean in the Basque country. (We are catching up with some missed dates for In The Key Of Pisces…) He was an innovator and a rebel. Rejected by the establishement in his youth, by the time of his death, he was acknowledged to be France’s greatest living composer. You might expect that with Uranus on the Midheaven. He was also an experimenter. Bolero, one of his most famous compositions, is all about repetition — a rather Piscean […]

Eclipse Surge

I woke up this morning feeling violently happy, which made me think of Icelandic songstress and musical genius, Björk. I wondered if she was born on an eclipse.  So I checked: she was born the day before one in November 1965. If you want to know about the surge of emotions of an eclipse, I recommend listening to Bjork. With her Sun, Moon, Ascendant in Scorpio, she is able to clearly express something deep, dark and dangerous. With her North Node in Gemini, she was destined to communicate this. Her songs are often about being on the edge of madness. […]

Experimental Podcast

My friend Andrea and I have been experimenting with microphones over the kitchen table. We’re planning a monthly podcast to broadcast when the Sun changes signs. We made one earlier this month, when the Sun moved into Pisces. Although it’s a bit rough around the edges, I thought I’d publish it for readers of this blog, since we talk about the eclipse a lot. Oh and there’s some stuff about Donald Trump’s hair and Einstein’s nodes that you might find amusing. By the Aries ingress, we should be a bit more fluent and focused.

In the Key of Pisces: Kiri Te Kanawa Sings Villa-Lobos, Segovia Plays & A Bonus

I think we’re beginning to get a feeling for the weaving, watery, complex Piscean sound. The work of Heitor Villa-Lobos (March 5), probably Latin America’s most famous 20th century composer, exemplifies this in many works. Many of his compositions are so woven into the soundtracks of our lives that you may know them without knowing you know them. These are subtle, beautiful, melodious, haunting, limpid. Villa-Lobos has the classic composer’s signature, Neptune Rising. The Piscean planet are pulled forward and put to work by Venus and Mercury in Aries. Kiri Te Kanawa (March 6) will make your hair stand on end with this […]

In the Key of Pisces: Tre Italiani

Thanks to my friend and reader, Sabrina, for pointing out that the late-lamented Italian singer-songwriter Lucio Dalla was born on March 4, 1943. He has a solo Sun in Pisces with other planets extraordinarily evenly spread through his chart. Sun does make a lovely trine to Jupiter in sentimental nostalgic Cancer. Here he is singing about Enrico Caruso, perhaps the greatest Italian tenor before Pavarotti — and another Pisces, born on February 25, 1873. But I had another Italian popster lined up for this day too. Umberto Tozzi, who is most famous outside Italy for this huge euro-hit of the 1980s, which […]

In the Key of Pisces: Miriam Makeba

Mama Africa: Miriam Makeba. Born on March 4, 1932. Makeba, along with her husband Hugh Masakela, was one of the most prominent artistic exiles from South Africa during the apartheid era. Although South Africa revoked her passport, 10 other countries stepped in to offer her citizenship. So she was truly a citizen of the world. She finally returned to South Africa – after three decades in exile – when Nelson Mandela was released. Sun, Mercury and Mars in Pisces. The action planet in the sign of feet and music often makes for a smooth dancer. Makeba’s music is certainly irresistibly dancey. […]

In the Key of Pisces: Chris Martin

“I definitely believe in God. How can you look at anything and not be overwhelmed by the miraculousness of it?” said Pisces singer-songwriter and Coldplay frontman, Chris Martin. There you have it. The sound of Coldplay has woven its way into the fabric of the past decade and a half — and it’s the words of Chris Martin we’re hearing. He is the band’s main songsmith, and it’s no wonder, he has Virgo Rising — a real wordsmith ascendant — so Mercury in Pisces rules this chart. Mercury is at 0° Pisces, which gives it an extra dose of dreamy poetry. […]
