How To Get Ahead in Politics

One of the most noticeable phenomena of recent times is the rise of the comedian-politician. And by that I don’t mean a funny guy running the country, I mean professional comedians who turn to politics. In democracies that is.  Just the other day, a comedian called Volodymyr Zelensky won the first round of voting in the Ukraine — and he looks likely to be the next president. He’s the star of a comedy TV show about a schoolteacher who becomes president, in which he plays… the president. It’s like Martin Sheen becoming US President while The West Wing was still […]

Your April Horoscopes

It’s an extraordinary month in an already pretty interesting year! Everyone is going to feel the shifting planets somehow, somewhere. And frankly to know this, all you have to do is turn on the news. The conjunction of Saturn, South Node and Pluto is a harbinger of the ending of certain quite long-held beliefs, the departure of certain people, the unravelling of certain systems…. Astrology of Now: Refound Beauty

Sometimes the music of the planets is pure magic. On the news this morning: the discovery of a painting by the Renaissance master, Sandro Botticelli — a version of the famous Madonna of the Pomegranates which hangs in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. It had been considered a fake, but when the layers of yellowing varnish were removed, the beautiful colours and delicate brushstrokes were revealed. After a lot of fancy tests by experts, the painting was verified as from the master’s own workshop. How perfect on the day after Venus (the Madonna) entered otherworldly, religious Pisces, the sign where […]

Oh The Magnficence: Scott Walker

I sometimes feel I need to shake myself like a wet dog after listening to Scott Walker, and, maybe, watch the droplets turn into glorious rainbows, transform into hummingbirds. Two lines into a Scott Walker song and you are immersed, taken into another, magical dimension. His perfect diction, histrionic delivery and psychedelic imagery are somehow “drenching” — that is the word that occurs to me. Scott Walker’s work is both unashamedly intellectual and emotional at the same time. His art is profoundly cathartic — a gift to the listener. He passed yesterday, but he sang songs about this moment a long […]

The British Blue Wave

When I stood at the top of Whitehall yesterday looking down that famous street towards Parliament Square, I saw a mass of blue flecked with yellow. The colours of the EU flag were worn on berets and backpacks, on capes and lapel pins, T-shirts and deelyboppers. There was a scattering of lurid blue wigs, and some delicate blue hair. It’s not often that the Queen starts a fashion trend, but I couldn’t help recalling her infamous EU hat, worn for her speech last year.   This was the march of more than one million citizens, according to the organisers, or […]

Equinox: Perfect Balance

We’ve reached that moment of perfect balance in the year, when the day is as long as the night, or the dark is as long as the light. It’s the beginning of the astrological year, when the Sun steps into Aries, perhaps with a little shake of excitement to get rid of the dampness of Pisces. Whether you’re North or South, there’s a little brisk friskiness at the equinox, a sense of possibilities and potential. The possibility of starting something afresh. This year is special, of course, because there’s a lush full Moon in Libra, the sign of relationships. Sun […]

Your Month Ahead Podcast

This month’s podcast meanders around a bit  but eventually builds up a head of steam. That’s what happens when you’re moving from watery Pisces to fiery Aries, and you’ve just had a nice bowl of leek and potato soup. Sally and I make found this mont’s astrology pretty fascinating in fact. Oh and do send in a question for next month…

Astrology of Now: The Brexit Collywobbles

Yet again, the Prime Minister, was defeated in the Commons. Members of Parliament voted down her withdrawal agreement with the EU for the second time by a massive majority last night. On March 29, Britain is due to leave the European Union. Meanwhile, both parties still seem to believe that Brexit is about party politics — not healing the soul of this country. The country’s soul is, of course, a sad, confused thing right now, like some poor dog gnawing at its own leg, wondering why its masters could be so cruel. So it’s interesting during this run-up to the […]
