Greta Thunberg, One of the Wise Children

“Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward […]

Karl, the Cat and Jacques de Bascher

The fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld — wizard, shape-shifter, and, as he put it himself, vampire — died in February, leaving a fortune to his gorgeous pet, Choupette, the most famous cat on Instagram. Lagerfeld showed all the signs of being a kind of ultra-Uranian from the top of his super-white hair (kept that why by the application of Klorane dry shampoo) to the soles of his pointy boots.  “I was born to live alone. Who cares?” — KL Indeed, it would not surprise me if if he had Uranus Rising, but we shall never know. For years, he lied about […]

Notre Dame: She Will Rise Again

Notre Dame, the great church of Our Lady in the heart of Paris, at the sharp end of the Ile de la Cité, burned spectacularly last night. One of her spires pointed a flaming finger at the sky. She crackled, she roared. But today she’s still standing. The images were shocking, of course. Yet my take-away from this event was not doomy or gloomy, but a feeling of hope. The great cathedral, a wondrous monument to human endeavour, faith and imagination, built by teams of people over centuries, had survived a potentially devastating fire — thanks to teams of our […]

How To Get Ahead in Politics

One of the most noticeable phenomena of recent times is the rise of the comedian-politician. And by that I don’t mean a funny guy running the country, I mean professional comedians who turn to politics. In democracies that is.  Just the other day, a comedian called Volodymyr Zelensky won the first round of voting in the Ukraine — and he looks likely to be the next president. He’s the star of a comedy TV show about a schoolteacher who becomes president, in which he plays… the president. It’s like Martin Sheen becoming US President while The West Wing was still […]

Your April Horoscopes

It’s an extraordinary month in an already pretty interesting year! Everyone is going to feel the shifting planets somehow, somewhere. And frankly to know this, all you have to do is turn on the news. The conjunction of Saturn, South Node and Pluto is a harbinger of the ending of certain quite long-held beliefs, the departure of certain people, the unravelling of certain systems…. Astrology of Now: Refound Beauty

Sometimes the music of the planets is pure magic. On the news this morning: the discovery of a painting by the Renaissance master, Sandro Botticelli — a version of the famous Madonna of the Pomegranates which hangs in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. It had been considered a fake, but when the layers of yellowing varnish were removed, the beautiful colours and delicate brushstrokes were revealed. After a lot of fancy tests by experts, the painting was verified as from the master’s own workshop. How perfect on the day after Venus (the Madonna) entered otherworldly, religious Pisces, the sign where […]
