Venus’ Transit of Cancer

Charles Joshua Chaplin

Charles Joshua Chaplin

Venus enters Cancer on July 31st. Relationship, money and self-esteem issues are sensitized.

Venus in Cancer is a tender, vulnerable transit – a mix of “I want/I need” and “I feel insecure with what I have.” Cancer’s protectiveness is based on insecurity. You can only connect with others on an emotional level if you feel what they’re feeling, which means feeling vulnerable. You can’t touch and be touched if you’re hiding behind a wall. Everything becomes personal-empathy increases, and so does painful subjectivity.

This can be the transit of hurt feelings. Every disagreeable remark and questionable glance cuts you to the core. Or, it can be the transit of sweet sustenance, as you tap into a healthy exchange of nurturing.

Venus in Cancer expresses love through mothering care. She wants to be needed. Therefore, your own wants and needs will be amplified during this transit. This can range from looking after yourself to looking after someone you love to feeling profoundly hurt because you’re not needed or wanted. Cancer’s connection to family and the past means nostalgia can be depressing or sweet.

The flip side of Cancer’s insecurity is (obviously) security. And that’s the goal of this transit. It’s not just about crying over what you can’t have. Or rampant comfort eating. Although consuming a pint of ice cream is not always a bad thing, food does not equal love.

Ultimately, this transit alerts you to what makes you feel safe.  If you don’t feel safe in a relationship, or with yourself, you’re going to be insecure. Developing a level of safety means establishing a comfort zone, which leads to security. Yes, this is one transit where sticking with your comfort zone is actually a good thing. Being secure means you can give and love with warm assurance, rather than grasping neediness.

Here are the aspects Venus in Cancer will make:

July 17th, 2017: Play It Smart, Not Crazy

  • Venus in Gemini square Neptune Rx in Pisces: 14 degrees
  • Mars in Cancer square Uranus in Aries: 28 degrees

When the planets of love (Venus) and sex (Mars) both make hard aspects to the outer planets, you know today has the potential to go off the rails. There could be an emotional pursuit of someone who doesn’t exist – you’re “in love” with their Instagram account. Or, the drunken text that seems edgy-sexy at the time. But you regret it the next morning.

Of course, this can be about other things. Venus is what you want and Mars is what you do to get it. Venus covers money, self-esteem, beauty and all social interactions. Mars is anger, violence, action.

Neptune’s blurry square can enhance a craving for something impossible, so you end up making the wrong choice (Gemini). Uranus’ push can trigger impulsive actions as you snap or take a risk. The root cause will probably involve a need (Cancer) that must be met ASAP.

As I wrote in this week’s horoscopes, Venus and Mars will calm down on the 18th with some beneficial aspects (post to follow on the 18th). So there is good potential here – Venus/Neptune can lead to something beautiful, compassionate and creative. Mars/Uranus can set you free as you give suffocating traditions/family the boot. The net result is expansion and opening. Exhale.

But you have to be careful today. Really careful. Think before you act. Consider your options. If you’re tempted to dive headfirst into something, ask yourself if it’s in your best interests. If you’re trying to open something up or pursue, control your impatience and move carefully. Do you really want X, or is something else at play?

Crab, Crayfish — or Scarab?

If you look at old manuscripts, or the doors of cathedrals, or stained glass or indeed most representations of the sign Cancer before the Renaissance, you won’t always be looking at a roundish, cosy old crab. Sometimes Cancer is a crayfish, sometimes an odd beetley thing, sometimes who knows?! In ancient Egypt, the constellation was named scarab, after the dung beetle, a creature of extraordinary importance in the Egyptian world. The dung beetle was associated with Khepri, the god of the rising sun, a creator god and bringer of life. Scarabs made of faience or carved from stone were popular amulets. Small ones must […]

Ceres’ Transit of Cancer

Honoré Daumier

Honoré Daumier

Ceres enters Cancer today, and she’s right at home in this sign.

She’s the Great Mother and goddess of the crops. The loss of her daughter (Persephone) to the King of the Underworld (Pluto) resulted in the crops withering until Persephone was allowed to return for part of the year.

Cancer is about sustenance, emotional protection and mother/child.

Ceres’ transit of Cancer could stir up the perfect storm for these issues – your relationship with food, your relationship with Mom, codependence, fear of being abandoned, etc. However, this transit can also favour the birth of a child or your own self-nurturing. Much depends on what’s churned up from the past, and your current experience of getting your needs met.

Ceres is as much about loss as she is about nurturing and feeding. On the same day as she enters Cancer, the Cancer Sun will make an exact opposition to Pluto Rx in Capricorn (18 degrees). Not only does this recall the the recent Capricorn Full Moon, it weaves Pluto’s undercurrent of death into her transit. Don’t be scared – Pluto’s “death” is often metaphorical and necessary. The absolute ending. And Ceres into Cancer is a brand new beginning, which can only happen after an absolute ending/transformation.

Of particular note will be Ceres’ opposition to Pluto (17 degrees) on August 21st, 2017.

This transit could confront you with a loss, in the present or from the deep past. But there’s also potential to build a powerful bond between yourself and another. The relationship between you and your Mom or child could be permanently transformed. Or, you could decide that it’s time to get serious about looking after yourself.

Ceres will exit Cancer on September 24th, 2017.
