Aquarius Season: Center or Fringe?

Photo by Stefan Stefancik from Pexels
The Sun enters Aquarius on January 20th, kicking off the season of the individualist. This Aquarius season will be defined by the Full Moon eclipse in Leo , occuring at the same degree as the Sun’s ingress. So we have contrasting themes – Leo passion/drama versus Aquarius detachment and logic. The Leo drive for appreciation/attention versus the Aquarian position on the fringe. Leo’s trend-setter versus the Aquarian drive to buck the trends.
But whether we’re talking about the center or the fringe, both these signs stand out – neither is one of the crowd. So this season could be about the ways you express your individuality. Have you been playing it cool and denying your desire to be appreciated? Or have you been wrapped up in ego games while a liberating, left-hand path beckons?
Aquarius is also about the future. There can be a vision of a better future – this sign can be highly idealistic as the innovative (or bizarre) idea of what’s coming up is better than what was or is. But if distorted, this sign’s energy can be about extreme bitterness and alienation, with zero hope for what lies ahead (the apocalyptic flag-waver).
But whether the future is viewed is hope or nihilism, detachment is always the driver. This is primarily an intellectual sign – the ability to stand back and analyze enables some truly wonderful (or frightening) leaps, unencumbered by sentiment.
This doesn’t mean Aquarians don’t have feelings, of course. But there is the ability to step back and view everything from a distance.
As Aquarius season progresses, consider what might happen if you stepped back from a particularly troubling issue – what solutions might emerge if you experimented with taking your feelings out of the equation (this is not impossible- try writing the issue down and only including the facts). This is an experiment, btw, not a set of instructions on how to deal with all issues.
Here are the aspects the Sun in Aquarius will make:
Jan 20th/21st: Full Moon eclipse in Leo (0 deg)
Jan 29th: conjunction with Mercury (9 deg)
Feb 4th: New Moon (15 deg)
Feb 7th: sextile to Jupiter in Sagittarius (18 deg)
Feb 9th: conjunct Black Moon Lilith (20 deg)
Feb 15th: inconjunct to the Cancer North Node (26 deg)
Feb 18th: sextile to Uranus in Aries (29 deg)
Feb 18th: trine Pallas in Libra (29 deg)
Feb 18th: Pisces ingress

Full Moon Eclipse in Leo: Pure Gold

The Full Moon Lunar eclipse (Jan 20th 9:15 pm PST/Jan 21st 12:15 am EST) occurs at 0 deg Leo. It makes no major aspects to any planets or asteroids, so its energy is quite pure. We have intensified Leo themes – pride, glory, creativity, performance, attention. 0 degrees also has a sense of purity about it – there’s a fresh, golden start here (even though the Full Moon is a culmination).
This eclipse occurs so close to the Sun’s Aquarius ingress ( Jan 20th /12:59 am PST/3:59 am EST) that we can consider it to be a description of this entire Aquarius season (especially if your birthday falls on January 20th or 21st). The themes will be something that brings you pride and joy, or reminds you that these things are missing from your life. Being noticed (or ignored). Staying true to yourself and your freedom even as you seek to create or gain the appreciation of others. Leo’s power lies with passion for creation and love of the audience. Aquarius’ power lies with the individual and cool detachment.
What do these contrasting influences mean to you? The Moon is in Leo, so that’s where the power is. But this is Aquarius season, so it’s all about the individual and detaching from the relentless need for attention. Remember, this eclipse is an ending but also a beginning (as all endings are).
This will be a massive attention grabber – an ending or result will be quite dramatic, and with the Aquarius theme, there’s a sense of the unexpected as well. What happens will be public, so consider if you want people to notice what’s coming up or not. Because this is a culmination, it’s building on what’s already happening, so you may have a hint about what’s approaching.
Key dates:
Jan 6th: Uranus (ruler of Aquarius) in Aries stations direct
Jan 18th: the Capricorn Sun squares Uranus
Also on January 20th there is an exact square between Venus in Sagittarius and Neptune in Pisces. Venus is 1 degree away from a conjunction to Jupiter in Sag, so this aspect recalls the Jupiter/Neptune square, with the added indulgence of Venus (what you want and love). Relationships, money and values will be a heady mix, redolent of narcotics and sugar (addictive, sweet and dangerous). Be careful what you spend or wish for. If you get what you want, you could end up disappointed or overwhelmed. On the other hand, these energies suggest magical possibilities and fortuitous breakthroughs. The square is a crisis, but every crisis means there’s a corner to turn.
On January 21st, we have a sobering square between Mars in Aries and Saturn in Capricorn. Bold actions (Mars) will be blocked or limited (Saturn). This will be a hard counterpoint to Venus/Neptune and it may not be such a bad thing. Mars/Saturn will ensure that you only go so far. And if you handle these energies correctly (work with the available potential and be careful) you may be able to manifest something extraordinary.
The eclipse will be bracketed by these contradictory influences, suggesting this culmination will involve a dream/highly desired goal and tremendous pressure. Any combo of Mars and Saturn means hard work. So if you want to create/get attention/be appreciated/be proud (Leo) there’s a job for you to do. But there’s also unlimited potential, and some of it is real.

The Magic Window
Commuters on a Train — Cyril Power[/caption] I grew up in a country where it was unusual, on public transport, to see people reading anything other than a smudged newspaper. I moved to London, where inside the bright-lit tube trains, a colourful collage of hundreds of paper covers made a journey gayer and more interesting. Tired people would bury their minds between the paper covers of novels and magazines. Who was reading Harry Potter? Or Tolstoi? Or The New Scientist? Today, when you ride a train or a bus or a plane, everyone escapes through the magic windows of their […]
