Any astrologer will tell you that you need an accurate birth time (for both partners) to get an accurate synastry and composite analysis. If one person’s birth time is unknown or vague, it can skew the entire reading. But sometimes, you simply don’t know the exact minute someone was born. This is especially true if that someone is a potential partner you’re not intimate with (yet). Is it still possible to get an accurate reading? This article will explore that question. Note that this is not a how-to article about chart rectification. Rectification is a technically demanding method of calculating birth time by working backwards from major life events.
Why Do You Need an Accurate Birth Time?
Let’s assume you know your birth time to the minute, but your partner’s time is completely unknown. The Ascendant, plus all the other house cusps, rely on birth time. The Ascendant moves approximately one degree every four minutes. The other house cusps follow the Ascendant. Without a birth time, their house positions will be unknown, which means you won’t know what area of your partner’s chart your planets activate. Do they view you as a 7th House partner? Do you touch them on their deepest, 8th House level? You also won’t know any of their house rulers, including their chart ruler (the planet that rules the sign their AC falls in) and their 7th House ruler (which will tell you what they’re looking for in a partner).
The Moon moves about half a degree per hour, or 12 degrees per day. Depending on what time they were born, your partner’s Moon may be on the cusp of a sign. If birth time is not precise, you’ll be guessing which sign their Moon (core needs) falls in. Speculating about someone’s Moon sign can be interesting (he’s so stubborn, his Moon must be in Taurus) but it’s also inaccurate. No matter how well you think you know them, their Moon’s instinctive behavior is not obvious. It can be strongly flavored by house position and aspects to natal planets. Sometimes their Sun sign may be unknown if they were born on a cusp. The Sun’s ingress into a new sign can take place any time during the day, even if July 23rd is the day that the Sun enters Leo. However, this scenario happens less frequently than with the Moon, since the Sun moves about one degree per day. The scenario is similar with Mercury and Venus, which also move about one degree per day (not counting stationary and retrograde motion).
Since the Composite chart is calculated from the midpoints of the natal charts, one person’s inaccurate birth time will make the Composite house positions and rulers a mystery. If the house position of the Composite Sun is unknown, you won’t know where the relationship’s main focus is. Is it intimate exchange (8th House)? Children (5th House)? Travelling and exploring (9th House)? Speaking of “where,” you’ll have no idea where any other relationship energies will express themselves. Will your love be private (12th House Venus) or public (10th House Venus)? Will your actions drive the relationship forward (1st House Mars) or will they be centered on domestic life and the past (4th House Mars)?
The Composite Moon sign (your shared emotions) can be either/or if it’s right on the cusp. The Composite Nodes, which describe the relationship’s past life (South Node) and path forward (North Node) will have no house positions to tell you where these issues are manifesting. For example, the Composite South Node is in Cancer, its ruler Moon in Taurus. The North Node is in Capricorn, its ruler Saturn in Aries. This partnership is meant to establish a new structure. But where? If the North Node was in the 4th House of home and family, your joint task would be to build a domestic foundation. But maybe the North Node is in the 10th House of career, so you’re meant to build that foundation externally. You have no way of knowing.
Here’s What You Can Know
Having written all of the above, lack of birth time is no reason to give up on having a reading. There is still some information you can glean about the connections between you and another.
The energy exchange between the two of you: Excluding their Moon, the signs and degrees of your partner’s planets (except, in some cases, their Sun, Venus and Mercury) and Chiron will accurate. On rare occasions, their Mars or Nodes might be on the cusp of a sign. But usually it’s a safe bet that you’ll know the signs and degrees. Which means you’ll also know the aspects most of their planets (barring their Moon) make to your planets. For example, your Saturn will probably square their Venus, no matter what time they were born. This gives you some crucial information on the interplay of love (Venus) and authority (Saturn) between you. You’ll know if their Mars (sex, anger, violence) conjuncts your South Node, giving you important clues about the past life connection between you. Issues such as sexual chemistry (aspects between Venus and Mars and/or Pluto/Uranus to Venus/Mars); commitment/control (aspects between Saturn, Pluto and the personal planets); romance/illusion/deceit (aspects between Neptune and the personal planets) will be there for you to see.
The energy of the relationship: Most aspects between Composite planets (except for the Moon) should be accurate. Whatever’s accurate in the synastry analysis will translate to the Composite chart. A Composite Sun/Saturn conjunction (if it exists) will be something you can point to. This relationship will have strong commitment potential, or at least mutual obligation. Hard aspects from Composite Saturn to Mars will highlight restrictions on sexual expression and joint actions. An aspect from Uranus to Composite Venus will tell you that the mutual expression of your love will be untraditional, or at least require a significant amount of freedom. If you’re confident about the signs their Nodes fall in, you can still get an idea about how the relationship needs to move forward. Using our South Node in Cancer/North Node in Capricorn example, you’ll know there needs to be a move away from survival-based neediness/dependence (Moon in Taurus) towards independence (Saturn in Aries). The overall concentration of Composite planets will be the same, regardless of birth time. If most of the planets are grouped together, the relationship will have an intense focus. If the Composite planets are scattered around the chart, the relationship may be more difficult to pull together.
I haven’t mentioned asteroids, the Vertex, Part of Fortune, Black Moon Lilith or any of the other parts and points. As interesting as these players are, the planets (including Chiron) and Nodes are the basic building blocks to any relationship reading. You should always look at them first. They tell the main story, while everything else fills in the footnotes and adds background information. A hard square between your Moon and your partner’s Saturn will not be softened by your Ceres trine their Saturn. When your partner’s birth time is unknown, it’s safest to focus on the basic elements and build as much of a story as you can from there.
If you have some idea of your partner’s birth time, obviously a narrower range will increase the reading’s accuracy. If the time is off by (roughly) five to ten minutes, you can be fairly confident about their Moon and the sign (if not the degree) of their AC and other house cusps (barring any sign cusp scenarios).
In an ideal astrologer’s world, we’d all know our exact birth times. But life is full of unknowns, and sometimes you have to work with the information you have. While accurate birth times are the gold standard for readings, it’s still possible to gain an understanding of your relationship without this information.
