Rough Waters: the Two Most Difficult Signs for the Progressed Moon

As your Moon progresses through the signs, there can be a dramatic shift in how you approach relationships. Your relationship needs take on the characteristics of different signs, and it’s an opportunity to experience the entire Zodiac spectrum. While all signs have their challenging sides, certain signs can be especially uncomfortable when your Progressed Moon dips into them. Note that the following descriptions only apply if your natal Moon is not in that sign: The assumption is that you’d be accustomed to dealing with this energy in your daily life.

Progressed Moon in Scorpio

When your Moon dives into Scorpio’s dark waters, feelings are intensified. You need a deeper connection with someone, and surface relationships will not satisfy you. Often, diving beneath the surface means exploring impulses that are not fun. Scorpio’s agenda of transformation works by confronting you with uncomfortable issues that you’d rather not deal with. The idea is that you confront them, work through them, and then rise up like the Phoenix, stronger and more vital than before. Sounds fab, right? That’s the Scorpio theory, but in practice, the Progressed Moon in Scorpio can get pretty dark.

While you always have to consider your natal potential, even the most laid-back folks can experience obsessive feelings during this progression. If you’re in an existing relationship, you may become fixated on certain issues with your lover (in the context of the house that your Progressed Moon is moving through). Jealousy, manipulation, power struggles or fears of abandonment can be themes. Scorpio is about endings, so you may be challenged to let go of one aspect of a relationship, or even the entire relationship. Sometimes (whether you’re single or not) a new attraction can manifest, and your pull towards that person can feel overpowering.

The key with Scorpio is this: Whatever you find yourself fixating on is what you need to release. Sometimes it’s a person, and sometimes it’s what that person triggers in you. You’ll have to do some digging with this one and take a hard look at what scares you. Because the flip side of Scorpio’s obsession is fear.

The positives of this progression can be enhanced intimacy and passion (in a healthy relationship). Scorpio can be the nudge that opens you up to a full commitment with your partner. On the other hand, Scorpio’s authentic energy can help you realize that a current relationship is not what you want at all. The Progressed Moon in Scorpio does not allow for dishonesty or avoidance.

Progressed Moon in Pisces

If Scorpio makes certain needs unavoidable, the Progressed Moon in Pisces can make all needs a bit vague. Scorpio focuses your needs, while Pisces blurs them. Pisces’ boundary-dissolving energy opens you up, but you can become lost at the same time. You may find yourself drifting, as your sensitivity is increased and your grasp on reality is compromised. Anxieties, fantasies, lack of motivation and lack of boundaries are common. Pisces also wants you to let go, but unlike Scorpio’s fixed intensity, everything and nothing seems to be a candidate. You need to release whatever your ego is attached to, while opening yourself up to new possibilities (appropriate to the house your Progressed Moon is moving through).

This one can be tough on existing relationships because you may not know what you really want. You can lose all sense of direction and float along with whatever your partner wants. On the flip side, you can get lost in anxieties (especially if you have a natal predilection for them) because nothing is certain. Where is your relationship going? Do you even want to be with your partner? The other possibility is becoming involved with someone that you feel compelled to save, as Pisces’ empathy is twisted into sacrifice.

With this progression, it’s crucial to remember that no matter what you’re meant to open yourself up to, sacrificing yourself is not the way to go. It can be tricky to figure out exactly where the line is between giving and giving up, but your best guide is to stick with what/who feels safe and positive. Your energy is easily drained, so allow yourself to pull back and practice self-care. This is not the best time to make decisions about the future of your relationship, or to commit to a new relationship. When your Progressed Moon moves into the next sign (Aries) you’ll wake up and suddenly everything will look very different (and much clearer). You may discover that what you needed to let go of had nothing to do with your partner. Or, you may discover that your role as savior/healer (to your partner) is not something you want to sustain.

The positives to this progression are also what makes it challenging. Your increased sensitivity can tune you into your partner’s needs (if you were not aware of them). If you’re in a grounded, healthy relationship, there can be a surge of romance between the two of you. All emotional connections can take on a misty, romantic tone, and compassion can increase as well. This can be a wonderfully healing influence if you need to let go of a niggling relationship issue, or if you want to release old wounds. Hurts have a way of quietly dissolving under Pisces’ influence.

It’s no coincidence that these are both Water signs, and both are concerned with endings. While the Moon is at home in the emotional Water signs, it can feel like you’re drowning. And most people simply do not like to let go; it triggers fear (Scorpio) and anxiety (Pisces). The above descriptions are not guarantees that these issues will manifest when your Progressed Moon enters these signs. As always, much depends on your natal chart, plus the condition of any new or existing relationships. But if you are having (or about to have) one of these progressions, remember that they are temporary (roughly two to three years). Allow yourself the space to feel what you feel, and release what no longer has validity in your life.
