Sometimes a person’s planets combine with your planets to create (seemingly) insurmountable relationship challenges. But actually, that person is the missing piece of your puzzle. Case in point is if you have a natal T-Square: two planets in opposition, and both squaring a third (the focal planet). If your partner’s planet opposes your focal planet, a Grand Cross is created between the two of you. That’s a whole lot of tension (a giant square with two oppositions inside it). However, this is actually one of the stronger synastric connections.
Let’s start by breaking down the T-Square. Melanie’s Saturn (rules and limits) opposes her Neptune (dreams and illusions). The tension between reality (Saturn) and fantasy (Neptune) is pronounced in her life. Neptune and Saturn both square Mars, the focal planet. Her actions (Mars) are undermined by dreams, or blocked by restrictions/fears. She either chases after illusions, or gives up in frustration because everything is overwhelming.
Melanie meets Ahmed, whose Sun (ego and purpose) opposes her Mars. Rather than cranking up her tension even more, Ahmed seems to reassure Melanie. Yes, his Sun is being hit by awkward squares from her Saturn/Neptune opposition. But the key with a T-Square is that the missing piece (the house and sign that oppose the focal planet) functions as the solution. And Ahmed’s Sun fills in that missing piece.
The houses and signs involved give us more information on how this might work. Technically, the three planets in a natal T-Square must occupy signs of the same modality (Cardinal, Fixed or Mutable). For example, Melanie’s Mars is in her 2nd House (personal resources and security) in Virgo, and it’s squared by Saturn in the 11th (groups) in Gemini, and Neptune in the 5th (self-expression) in Sagittarius (all Mutable signs). She has difficulties with initiating appropriate actions to take care of herself (2nd House). She vacillates between sacrificing everything (Virgo squared by Neptune) or shutting others out because they’re not good enough (Virgo squared by Saturn). Perhaps she flips back and forth between mistrust (Saturn in the 11th) or being seduced by the wrong person (when she gets captivated by the romantic dream of her 5th House Neptune).
But Ahmed’s Sun falls in her 8th House (shared resources and intimacy) in Pisces. Through his warmth and compassion, he shows her how to share (rather than hoard or give everything away). His Sun challenges her fears, her illusions, and the way she takes action. But the sum of all this tension is a prompt for Melanie to learn how to blend her physical and emotional resources with another (8th House Pisces).
This is not a guarantee that the relationship will work out. But the Mutable Grand Cross that is formed between them will create a strong bond. Because of the Mutable qualities, there will be an emphasis on problem solving and adaptability. Melanie and Ahmed may work together to continually improve their intimacy. If Fixed signs were involved (Taurus, Scorpio, Leo, Aquarius) they might reinforce each other’s desires. If Cardinal signs were featured (Libra, Aries, Cancer, Capricorn) this might turn into a sizzling connection, where Ahmed spurred Melanie on to more daring expressions of sexuality.
No matter which signs are featured, Ahmed’s Sun will act as a release for the tension of Melanie’s T-Square. She now has an opposition to her Mars to balance out her Saturn/Neptune opposition. The tension between losing herself versus holding herself back is focused on the question her Mars asks: What action is appropriate? The answer: sharing (8th House).
If Ahmed’s planet were less friendly, the connection would feel more challenging to Melanie. Maybe his Saturn (rules and authority) sits in her 8th House (opposing her Mars). He would call the shots regarding shared finances or in the bedroom. She might follow his rules but find them restrictive. Or, maybe his authority would be the reality check Melanie needed. Either way, she would still feel a pull towards Ahmed.
It’s also true that having a natal T-Square can create a huge amount of energy and ambition. The dynamic tension that’s created is the engine that drives accomplishments. It’s not always a case of the T-Square person flailing around, with the planet person riding in to save the day. But even if you’re using the maximum potential of your T-Square, you’ll still feel a “click” when another person’s planet completes it.
