Sun, Moon, & Rising Sign Style

Though most people are taught to follow their sun sign, it’s usually ones rising sign (or ascendant) that is the better basis for general horoscopes and personality typing. The ascendant sign is that which was “rising” on the Eastern Horizon at the moment of your birth. The degree of the horizon therefore becomes the beginning of your first house – the area of ones natal chart that rules the worldly persona. Appearance and behavior patterns that make up what’s considered a personality are governed by the first house. Accordingly, it can be argued that it’s the rising sign, rather than the sun sign that is most important to personal style. image source: terrallectualism

From another perspective, the placement of the moon is a key indicator of what makes us feel comfortable; and since comfort is an important part of confidence, honoring the moon sign is also important in the pursuit of apparel and accessories that are perfectly apt to ones lifestyle.

Finally, though the sun does generally get over-emphasized it does deserve consideration in any astrological assessment. It is the center of everything in our (infinitesimally) little corner of the universe, afterall. While the rising sign describes our physical personalities, the placement of the sun more closely describes our soul personalities. It follows that those that seek a life motivated by spiritual pursuits should may like to use visual tools to bridge the distance between body and spirit.

Depending on the intention, the placements of Venus, Mars, and even Mercury can come into play when discuss style, according to the stars. To begin however, the Ascendant, Moon, and Sun (in that order) are key points to consider for sartorial pursuits. Let’s use EightyJane as an example.

Scorpio Rising
– intolerant of poor quality
– needs refined drama

Sagittarius Moon
– requires freedom of movement
– seeks ethical products

Aries Sun
– thrives on the masculine principle
– must have simplicity

These key factors point to a brand like Stella McCartney being a good choice for E.J. The label is high-end and, therefore, should have a high standard of quality; it has a definite perspective that makes it stand out among the crowd, and yet the aesthetic is restrained – not overly trendy; it’s namesake founder is a well-known animal rights advocate, who refuses to use fur or leather in her designs; and it’s most signature piece is a blazer, the likes of which McCartney is often seen wearing with simple tee and jeans.
