When you get hit with a Uranus transit, at least one area of your life will be shaken and stirred. Most Uranus transits are dramatic, but certain ones are significant turning points in your life (like the Saturn return). The Uranus square (when transiting Uranus squares your natal Uranus) occurs for everyone around the ages of twenty-one and sixty-three (roughly). It triggers two watershed moments in how you express your individuality. You may experience these moments through your romantic relationships, if one of the following conditions is present in your natal chart:
- Transiting or natal Uranus is in your 1st, 7th, or 5th house
- Natal Uranus conjuncts, opposes or squares your natal Sun, Moon, Venus or Mars
A square creates tension. There’s discomfort that demands you do something to address it, as well as make the required changes. During the first Uranus square, your young-adult urge to express “This is ME” runs up against external resistance. This is the first, significant taste you’ll get of what it means to be an individual who acts against rules or expectations. During the second Uranus square, your individuality must be reassessed against the facts of aging (such as retirement and physical issues). You’re no longer young, and you have to find a new way to express yourself.
The First Uranus Square
Deisie has a Moon/Uranus conjunction in her 4th House of Home and Family. She’s tied to the emotional familiarity of her parents (4th House Moon) and is reluctant to move out. But natal Uranus makes her restless and ill at ease with this familiarity. Her family life is certainly not smooth; her mother is erratic and moody, leaving Deisie with a constant sense of uneasiness about what will happen next. However, home is home, no matter how unstable.
Around her 21st birthday, transiting Uranus moves through her 7th House of Relationships and squares her Moon/Uranus conjunction. She meets Annan, who becomes her first love. She’s overwhelmed by her feelings. Annan wakes her up, shocking her with the intensity of her attraction. He convinces her to move in with him, and is the catalyst who pushes her to liberate (Uranus) herself from her family.
But this relationship is not Deisie’s happily ever after. Annan has a drug habit, and steals money from her. He disappears for days at a time, and Deisie is always on edge, wondering when he’ll come home and what state he’ll be in. Her parents try to convince Deisie to break up with him (and move back in with them). Deisie refuses; not only does her Moon/Uranus conjunction make her stubborn, she feels trapped between her newfound “freedom” and her old, family situation.
So Deisie has rebelled. She’s claimed her independence from her family, but it’s a frying-pan-into-the-fire-situation. The Uranus square has presented a relationship with the amount of intensity needed to claim her independence. But being with Annan makes Deisie realize that emotional unpredictability is familiar to her. She hasn’t really escaped from it. Deisie is going to break up with him, and her choices won’t end there. She can allow this first love to become the template for all her future relationships (unions with men she can’t depend on). Or, she can understand that part of her needs unpredictability, and she’ll find healthier ways to work freedom into her life. The importance of this Uranus square relationship cannot be underestimated. How she moves forward will decide how she expresses her need (Moon) for domestic freedom (Uranus) in the future.
The Second Uranus Square
Bill is approaching his sixty-third birthday. He’s been married to Alice for forty, mostly happy, years. Bill’s natal Uranus sits in his 1st House of Identity; he always puts his agenda first. He defines himself as a lone wolf, even in the context of his marriage. His Uranus squares his natal Venus (in his 4th House). Venus represents how he gives and receives loves, and it represents his wife. Commitment is possible for him (obviously) but he’s demanded a ton of personal space to go along with it. He spends a lot of time away from Alice (either for work, or on solitary vacations). He’s always been faithful to her, loves her deeply, and treats her with respect. But he must have his space. For her part, Alice has been understanding, and is quite independent herself. The relationship works for them.
Transiting Uranus passes over Bill’s 4th House Venus, and hits his natal Uranus with a square. Alice falls down the stairs in their house and is badly injured. Once she’s released from the hospital, it will be almost a year before she’s able to get around on her own. She’ll need help getting out of bed, getting into the shower, and the stairs will be impossible (until she recovers). Now Bill needs to be home all the time, so he takes early retirement. He’s the lone wolf no more. He’s cut off from who he used to be, and is unsure how to respond to his newly dependent wife.
Bill can choose how he’ll react to these changes. He can become depressed, withdrawn and angry with Alice, blaming her even though (logically) he knows it wasn’t her fault. Or, he can step back and see this as an inevitable shift in the way he’s been living. Perhaps, as he spends more time at home and helps Alice through her recovery, he discovers a passion for holistic medicine and pain management. He becomes so fascinated with these subjects that he downloads e-books and enrolls in an online course. Simultaneously, he throws himself into remodelling the downstairs portion of their house, to provide easier access for Alice. And as he spends more time with her, he discovers facets of her personality that he overlooked (or had forgotten). Alice (his Venus) has suddenly (transiting Uranus) been transformed. So has Bill’s home life (4th House). The Uranus square is demanding that he adjust his identity to meet these changes, and it can be the start of a new life, for him and Alice.
The Uranus squares are turning points that push you to change how you express your independence. When the Uranus square involves your love life, the way you respond to a new partner, or changes in an existing partnership, will be crucial. How you view the concepts of freedom and individuality (in the context of a relationship) will be transformed. As with all transits, there is opportunity. With the Uranus squares, that opportunity is to become a different (and hopefully better) partner.
