When Mercury dives into Scorpio’s mysterious waters, it’s hard not to notice a surge in the spook factor. During this nearly three-week long transit we are magnetically drawn to topics that feed our obsessions. The Mind is focused on getting to the bottom of everything it can.
Whether it stems from an unfounded sense of paranoia or a legitimate desire to connect, one thing is for sure: Mercury in Scorpio wants to know everything it can about the person he’s speaking with. He doesn’t make use of direct probing questions, though. The trickster planet is much more covert than that when it glides through Scorpio. Just be aware that Mercury is fixated on everything you say, and will store much of it for future reference—whether to align with you or to bring you down.
Small talk about the weather won’t satisfy Mercury’s hunger for deep content. Mercury in Scorpio wants to feel and, whether that feeling is pleasant or otherwise, it just needs to be real. If you’re asked how you’re doing while Mercury is in Scorpio, you might as well skip the pleasantries and go straight for the truth. After all, this little communication planet can effectively tune into the unspoken vibe, and smell the cover-up.
In fact, there may be very little in the way of verbal communication. Mercury is tuned into what’s not being said; he’s reading between the lines. Operating through Scorpio’s water element, Mercury’s antenna is attuned to the emotional temperature of his audience. This helps him gauge where any potential tripwires are that could set off alarm bells. Sometimes Mercury in Scorpio will sound the alarm to bust someone for being fake or corrupt. Other times, he’ll just make mental note of who is not to be trusted, and who has an agenda. The irony being that Mercury in Scorpio has an agenda himself.
If you’re brave and unconcerned about what Mercury is doing with all of the information you unwittingly feed him then, by all means, bare your soul. He’s especially fond of seeing into that potentially tortured place. Just don’t expect to turn the looking glass back to him. When Mercury is in privacy-protecting Scorpio, it’s not a mutual exchange of information he’s after; just the dirt.
