Mavis Staples is more than a singer; she is a force of nature, a living testament to the power of song, faith, and unwavering conviction. From the raw spirituals of the Civil Rights movement with The Staple Singers to her recent collaborations with contemporary legends, Mavis’s voice remains a beacon of hope and strength. As she prepares to release her new album, Sad and Beautiful World, on November 7, 2025, her astrological chart offers profound insight into the enduring spirit of this American icon.
Born July 10, 1939, Mavis Staples’ chart reveals a woman of immense emotional depth, fiery courage, and an unshakeable commitment to justice.
The Nurturing Heart: Sun & Venus in Cancer
Mavis’s core identity and sense of self are rooted in Cancer, the sign of the mother, the protector, and the keeper of emotional heritage.
- Sun (17∘31′) in Cancer: This placement speaks to her deeply empathetic nature, her profound connection to her family (The Staple Singers), and her powerful sense of community. The Cancer Sun makes her a natural nurturer, offering comfort and emotional sustenance through her music. It grounds her in tradition and roots, giving her an authentic voice that resonates with universal human experience.
- Venus (1∘57′) in Cancer: Her expression of love, her values, and her artistic style are also deeply imbued with Cancerian energy. This early-degree Venus highlights her preference for intimacy, security, and a heartfelt approach to her art. Her soulful, emotive delivery—which can be both tender and fiercely protective—is a direct manifestation of this placement.
The Fiery Activist: Moon & Jupiter in Aries
While her Sun and Venus are deeply rooted in nurturing Cancer, Mavis’s emotional world and her capacity for bold action are ignited by Aries.
- Moon (27∘39′) in Aries: Her deepest emotional needs are for autonomy, courage, and pioneering spirit. This Aries Moon is the engine of her activism, granting her the fire and fearlessness to stand on the front lines of the Civil Rights movement alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. She felt deeply, and acted boldly. This Moon gives her the resilience to keep pushing forward, even when facing immense challenges.
- Jupiter (8∘11′) in Aries: The planet of expansion and belief in the pioneering sign of Aries further amplifies her role as a leader and an inspirer. Jupiter in Aries gives her an expansive, optimistic faith in the power of action and a conviction in fighting for what is right. It imbues her with an infectious enthusiasm for justice and freedom.
The Unshakeable Spirit: Saturn Square Pluto (0∘orb)
This exact square between Saturn and Pluto is arguably the most powerful aspect in Mavis’s chart and a definitive key to her resilience and the transformative nature of her career.
- Saturn (0∘16′) in Taurus: Her discipline, structure, and sense of duty (Saturn) are profoundly grounded in enduring, tangible values (Taurus)—her voice, her family’s musical legacy, and her rootedness in Chicago.
- Pluto (0∘40′) in Leo: Her power, transformation, and regeneration (Pluto) are expressed through creative self-expression, performance, and leadership (Leo).
- The Conflict: An exact square between these two titans means Mavis’s life has been a relentless process of dismantling old structures and rebuilding them in a more powerful, authentic way. This aspect often accompanies those who face systemic oppression but emerge stronger, using their creative force (Pluto in Leo) to challenge and rebuild the status quo (Saturn in Taurus). It explains her profound ability to sing truth to power and remain creatively vital for over 70 years.
The Bob Dylan Connection
Mavis Staples’ long-standing connection to Bob Dylan is a legendary footnote in music history. Dylan, with his Sun in Gemini, known for his lyrical genius and intellectual exploration, and Staples, with her deeply emotive Cancer Sun and Aries Moon, represent a fascinating astrological dynamic. While their paths diverged romantically, their shared commitment to authentic expression and their deep respect for each other’s artistry—a kind of Moon-Mercury kinship (her Aries Moon driving her bold message, his Gemini Mercury crafting his words)—speaks to a powerful, unspoken connection that transcended genres and personal relationship, leaving an indelible mark on each other’s lives and music.
