The Progressed Moon & Transiting Saturn in Synastry cycle is a crucial but often overlooked process in depth astrology. It explains how this 28-year cycle, beginning at the natal Moon’s return, is a key indicator of our soul’s development and our ability to find authenticity and a sense of purpose. This is especially true when we look at Progressed Moon & Transiting Saturn in Synastry, where the cycles of two people intertwine.
Interpreting Progressions in Synastry
The study of progressions can be tricky. It’s especially difficult to grasp the relationship between the progressed and natal charts. For instance, what does a progressed planet aspecting another progressed planet mean? How do you interpret that in relation to the natal chart? A lot of astrologers “cheat” by skipping progressed-to-progressed positions. They focus only on progressed-to-natal aspects. This overlooks a vital tool in depth astrology. Progressed-to-progressed positions tell us exactly where we are in spiritual terms.
Understanding the Progressed Moon & Transiting Saturn Cycle
The cycle of the Progressed Moon and its relationship to the Saturn cycle in the natal chart is an easier progression to grasp. This cycle is incredibly vital to our soul development and our work in the world. I’m surprised it isn’t discussed more on astrology sites. You don’t even need an ephemeris to understand it. You can find more information about how this dynamic plays out in relationships in our article on Synastry Studies.
It’s crucial to understand the creative relationship between the Moon and Saturn. The energy flow of the I.C. and the Saturn shows how we bring the world “in here” (the birth of consciousness) and create something “out there” that is useful. When this flow functions properly, we feel connected to a sense of personal power. By using that inner core of power, we feel legitimate and validated. We gain a sense of inner authenticity and authority no one can diminish. This is a core theme of the Progressed Moon & Transiting Saturn in Synastry experience.
The Quest for Authenticity and Self-Discovery
Part of the journey towards authenticity involves developing the sense of “I.” We do this through the Ascendant/Descendant axis. We test our sense of “I” through “other.” The ferocious quest for a partner when we’re younger isn’t just about sex. It’s about this inner need for self-definition. By partnering, we connect the male and female halves of the psyche. We experience ourselves through another. As we mature, partnership doesn’t carry the same panic because we have had these self-defining experiences. The quest continues, but the urgency lessens.
The Progressed Lunar Return and Saturn Return
Everyone familiar with astrology has heard of the infamous Saturn return. This often highlights our culture’s focus on the M.C. (external success) and our avoidance of all things Saturn. The Saturn return is indeed difficult. For the first time in our lives, we face a responsibility that is entirely our own. We must grow up and begin doing what we were meant to do. But why is this so hard? Because the year before the Saturn return, the Progressed Lunar Return strips us of our security. This powerful experience is central to the Progressed Moon & Transiting Saturn cycle.
Like all returns, the Progressed Lunar Return signifies both an ending and a beginning. It is the “queen of all returns.” It takes away our security blanket because it dislikes us clinging to the past. The calculation is simple: the Progressed Moon takes twenty-eight years to return to its natal place. Usually, the year before the exact return, when the Progressed Moon is ten to twelve degrees before the conjunction, we begin to lose our footing. Familiar things slip away. Or, we feel an urge to discard things, habits, and patterns we’ve outgrown.
Depending on the Moon’s condition in the natal chart, we experience one of two reactions: a real break from the past, or a deeper enmeshment in family patterns. This is often out of fear. We often have a deep desire for change. Sometimes we wish to consolidate familial duties, but this return is not the time for it. It asks for shedding the old and initiating the new. With my Moon/Uranus conjunction, my first lunar return led me to Europe, a marriage abroad, and a brand new life.
Marriage and Divorce During the Cycle
Speaking of marriage, marriages are not recommended during this time. They can indicate a desire to cling to the tribe rather than individuate. They may also be a doomed attempt to fill a gap of emotional insecurity. They might also temporarily fulfill our urgings to “move on.” I have no statistics, but my client database shows that marriages at this time can be short-lived. Divorce is also common. It often ends early marriages that may have substituted for other internal development. For more on the Moon/Saturn dynamic, see Part Two of our series.
Cardinal Signs and Consciousness Development
Have you noticed that the planets we call “relationship planets” all rule cardinal signs? Aries—Mars, Cancer—Moon, Libra—Venus, Capricorn—Saturn. The “story” of cardinality is the development of consciousness. This must evolve through interaction with “other.” This is why Saturn is exalted in Libra.
Aries represents the outward movement, the pre-conscious life force. Seven years later, the Progressed Moon forms its first square to itself. Age seven is the age of reason in many religions. At this age, a child is expected to understand right from wrong. This initiation of conscious awareness is the “birth” associated with Cancer. At this time, we also experience Saturn’s first square to itself. This emphasizes responsibility.
Teenage Chaos and Self-Discovery
At age 14, we often go through intense challenges. This is due to the Saturn opposition to itself combined with the intense feelings of the Progressed Moon’s opposition to itself. It’s no wonder we experience total chaos emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Our feelings rage. We know we need to separate from the tribe but can’t yet. We try to create new tribes. We know we must be responsible. But the burden of that responsibility feels overwhelming. We resist doing what we’re told but don’t know what else to do. Sex gains importance. Finding a partner becomes a focus.
We are now strongly in a Libra/Aries phase. The union of Self and Other is urgent. The push towards Self-discovery is intense. In many cultures, this year marks a real split. We leave childhood to “become” a man or a woman.
Finding Our Place in the World
If we’re lucky, we sort through this over the next seven years. We reach our first understanding of partnership needs and desires. At age 21, we move into our first Capricorn/MC year. The impetus is to find our place in the world. For the first time, we need to define ourselves in terms of “the world out there.” Both Saturn and the Progressed Moon are forming waning squares to themselves in the natal chart. The waning square is the most focused in the cycle. It recognizes its limited time to accomplish its tasks. We sense an ending in the distance. Yet we aren’t sure how to fulfill our requirements. Like all first cycles, everything in the first 28 years is fraught with newness.
Opportunities for Retreat and Individuation
During all the crisis points of this cycle, opportunities for retreat exist. We can revert to old behavior patterns. We can lose enthusiasm for our progress. It’s easier to avoid change. With the first Progressed Lunar Cycle, we confront the baggage we brought into this world. We decide what to do with it. This feels more like cleaning up loose ends from past lifetimes. The satisfaction of individuation arrives later. We may achieve fame or success before age 28. But often with a strange sense that they aren’t truly our own. At age 28, we begin to step up to individual responsibility. We have a much stronger sense that our lives need shaping by more than instinct. We begin to crave a direction—an area where we can focus our newly discovered selves.
