When Jupiter Is Not Your Friend

A split-faced image of the god Jupiter, representing the dark side of Jupiter in astrology and its bubble-bursting nature.
Jupiter’s dual nature: the bringer of expansion, and the Piscean force that clears the way for it through necessary sacrifice.

When we begin learning astrology, we’re told that Jupiter is the “great benefactor.” He’s the good guy, the bringer of luck, adventure, and expansion. We want him transiting our chart, promising good fortune. He makes us feel free, unfettered, and part of a bigger plan.

But there’s something a little fishy about him. Literally.

The truth is, Jupiter is not always what he seems. The burst bubbles and disappointments many of us experience during major Jupiter transits aren’t a fluke. They are a core part of his job, a job he gets from his co-rulership of Pisces.

The Fishy Side of Jupiter: The Pisces Co-Rulership

Before Neptune was discovered, Jupiter was the sole ruler of both Sagittarius and Pisces. While we associate him with happy-go-lucky Sag, his Piscean side is far more complex and challenging. Pisces is about extremes—the choice between heaven and hell, dissolution and divine connection. As its traditional ruler, Jupiter is deeply embroiled in these matters.

This explains the dark side of Jupiter in astrology. While Neptune dissolves boundaries with a mystical fog, Jupiter breaks them with force. He is the king of letting go, and often, that process is not gentle.

Jupiter the Wrecking Ball

Saturn gets the bad rap for restriction, but Jupiter often gets away scot-free for the chaos he causes. As author Dawn Bodrogi has observed, Jupiter is often the catalyst for major life upheavals that we mistake for bad luck.

“Over and over again, I’ve seen Jupiter tip over the edge a situation that was manageable before he showed up. He unlocks our chains, cuts our restraints. But sometimes, restraints are needed.”

Consider the following:

  • More divorces can happen when Jupiter transits the Descendant.
  • Jobs are often lost when Jupiter transits the Midheaven.
  • Homes or family connections can be severed when Jupiter crosses the IC.

Saturn is the planet of material reward; Jupiter is the planet that creates the space for it, and that often requires a significant sacrifice.

Be Careful What You Wish For

Jupiter’s Piscean job is to clear out what’s old to make way for the new. If you’ve been longing for a new job but haven’t made a move, a Jupiter transit might make you redundant. Now you have to find one—lucky you. He is the ultimate king of “be careful what you wish for” if you aren’t prepared to make the proper sacrifices.

This is where we see the dark side of Jupiter in astrology most clearly. We can become so blinded by a vision of potential (Jupiter) that we fail to see the reality (Saturn). We fall headlong into traps, chasing potentials that may never manifest. Entire lives can be sacrificed to this realm of what’s possible rather than what’s real.

The Choice Jupiter Offers

Fortunately, unlike Neptune’s overwhelming fog, Jupiter offers judgment and a choice. He knows when we have reached a crossroads. In a chart where Pisces or Neptune runs rampant, it is often Jupiter who provides a path through the chaos.

He can be the lawmaker who sacrifices ego for the greater good, revealing a compassionate wisdom free from personal interest. Or he can be the law-breaker, whose hungers grow so enormous that they remove all barriers to self-indulgence.

Ultimately, Jupiter’s darker function is to force a confrontation with truth. He bursts the bubble of our illusions so we can build something more authentic in its place.
