Last night I was working on creating and destroying energy in my feminine meditation class. Beyonce’s Lemonade kept entering my mind. Specifically this\u00a0image:<\/span><\/p>\n

A\u00a0point my teacher made was we often use our feminine energy to create, create, create (often to the point of obsession for us creative types) but neglect to honor the need for\u00a0destruction. I thought of my twelfth\u00a0house Pluto in Libra and the idea that Cosmos\u00a0holds us accountable to the principle of balance, regardless of our desires. I also thought of Venus, naturally. Venus is the bright life giver; she is loving Mother Earth energy. Yet the Earth Goddess archetype that so generously gives can also take life away when enraged (not often discussed in the context of an astrological session, when we speak of Venus!). Through\u00a0Beyonce, the whole\u00a0<\/em>Venus has arrived.<\/p>\n

If you haven\u2019t watched <\/a>Lemonade<\/a> you\u2019re missing out on a fiercely beautiful, feminine, piece of ritual art that can best be summed up in one word: Archetypal. Beyonce is Innana<\/a>, the Sumerian Goddess of sexual love and warfare, embodied. She\u00a0is Venus, with teeth.<\/strong>\u00a0There are many interpretations\u00a0of Innana\u2019s myth involving the journey to wholeness through the alchemy of betrayal, loss, redemption. There is a process<\/a>, a descent through the seven gates of hell. In the story, at each gate\u00a0Innana is asked to give up another attachment (her: jewels and clothing, magic girdle, worldly\u00a0position, role as a woman, sexual power) so by the time she\u2019s reached the last gate she is naked, stripped of her identity. You can take nothing with you into the underworld. She then receives the integration of meeting her “dark sister\u201d,\u00a0symbolically, the part of our self who feels: undeserving of love, is enraged, bitter, angry, victimized, lonely.\u00a0Innana is loved and\u00a0desirable, but through\u00a0her dark sister,\u00a0she meets her opposite. Then\u00a0Innana is\u00a0left there to die, and that’s when her\u00a0journey to\u00a0resurrection begins. What ultimately revives Innana? Her dark sister must let go of her personal anguish, grief and despair,\u00a0she must give Innana back to the world. She must forgive.\u00a0Plutonian, right? No\u00a0surprise here:\u00a0Beyonce has Venus-Pluto conjunct in Libra.<\/p>\n

Innana\u00a0in ancient art<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

This piece is similarly process-oriented. In Lemonade, there are eleven phases, and each phase has its own song and emotional themes: \u201cIntuition,\u201d \u201cDenial,\u201d \u201cAnger,\u201d \u201cApathy,\u201d \u201cEmptiness,\u201d \u201cAccountability,\u201d \u201cReformation,\u201d \u201cForgiveness,\u201d \u201cResurrection,\u201d \u201cHope,\u201d and \u201cRedemption.\u201d Some have likened\u00a0these sections\u00a0to the Kubler-Ross five stages of grieving<\/a>, but this artwork\u00a0screams of Innana\u2019s journey. Similarly, at each gate Beyonce is forced to wrestle with her own denial, illusions of love, rage, etc. Beyonce’s desirability\u00a0is deemed impotent by the betrayal of the man she loves most.\u00a0She is reduced to the\u00a0enraged, ugly, dark sister, (Erishkegal) who was denied love and companionship…\u00a0though she’s not\u00a0diminished by this. She embraces\u00a0her\u00a0dark sister, and that’s when the journey to healing begins.<\/p>\n

The imagery and lyrics of Lemonade are full on female: menstrual blood in a womb-like tunnel, voiceovers about the Moon’s influence mix with orgasms, ghost brides, voodoo, empty sexual longing, what it means to be an African- American woman and childhood reflections about her mother’s and grandomother’s\u00a0marital relationships, and how she now sees herself in their story, too. We are led from denial to recognition to\u00a0rage to healing. The journey is thorough; she doesn’t leave us\u00a0stuck in the injustice of betrayal,\u00a0feeling like a victim.\u00a0No, this transformation is total, which is what makes it so deeply process-oriented,\u00a0feminine and healing.<\/p>\n

\"Beyonce_Lemonade<\/p>\n

Lemonade is self-described as \u201ca conceptual project based on every woman\u2019s journey of self-knowledge and healing.\u201d This\u00a0is a feminine journey into the underworld. We\u2019ve all been there, before.<\/strong> But the beauty of Lemonade is we can use this artistic\u00a0journey\u00a0to heal our selves. Once upon a time, the role\u00a0of dramatic performance, and the performer,\u00a0wasn’t merely\u00a0to entertain but to help us process our feelings and experiences, to take us on a journey into our selves and return\u00a0cleansed, redeemed, reborn as truer, more integrated and whole. The word catharsis, derived from two root words meaning \u201ccleanse\u201d and \u201cpure\u201d, was popularised by the advent of Greek theater, which allowed the audience members to cathart\u00a0–to release emotions through drama. Lemonade does this. It brings us to our knees, cleanses the wound, then\u00a0gives\u00a0us back to life. We are reborn -with the help of the Goddess.<\/p>\n

There are so many Goddess motifs in Beyonce\/Lemonade it’s stunning. Astrologer Dana Gerhardt and I were email chatting about Lemonade, and Dana noted that Beyonce often appears in the media at fiery Brigid<\/a> holidays like Candelmas\/Imbolc, bringing\u00a0fire, literally (as she did at her superbowl performance). Whether familiar with the myths and archetypes, or not, genius artists\u00a0are often channels for the collective, bringing\u00a0the mythic down to Earth.<\/p>\n

Use this wonderful piece of Greek theater for your own process — but don\u2019t make the mistake of thinking Lemonade is just about extramarital\u00a0betrayal. It’s about loss, loss of illusion, how we use female power,\u00a0how we heal from our shattered disappointments…or whatever you<\/em> see into it, because this kind of\u00a0art gives each person something different.\u00a0It’s initiated an inner dialogue about\u00a0my own creatrix\/destroyer energy. As Dana wrote, in one of our exchanges, \u201cIt\u2019s really about the relationship with yourself\u2014or yourself with the world\u2014and as it goes in the myth, we need the goddess to get resurrected!\u201d<\/p>\n

Finally, this dialogue with feminine energies\u00a0is relevant now as\u00a0Venus in Gemini makes\u00a0a superior conjunction to the Sun June 6.<\/strong> She disappeared from sky view in May,\u00a0into the underworld, and will\u00a0return to hang in the night sky once again on July 14, in Leo, radiant and reborn. Gemini is the sign of synthesizing opposites, so\u00a0integrating any inner contradictions surrounding our values, self-worth, pleasures and connections makes sense at\u00a0this time.\u00a0This Goddess, Venus, supports all healing\u00a0journeys\u00a0undertaken on our\u00a0path to wholeness.<\/p>\n

Venus may go invisible… but\u00a0the Goddess walks among us. All hail, Beyonce!<\/p>\n
