When does a Scorpio not act like a Scorpio? Why would an Aries be different from what you expect? If a certain sign or house in their chart is emphasized, that energy will dominate. A grouping of natal planets (called a stellium)<\/a>\u00a0puts so much energy in one sign that their Sun can be overwhelmed (if it’s in a different sign). Or, if the house their Sun is in contradicts that sign, they may act in a way that’s not “typical.” If you rely on the Sun sign rules that a Scorpio is always intense, or that an Aries always wants to be first, you’ll find that you’re attempting to have a relationship with a very different person.<\/p>\n

Sun Sign Basics<\/h2>\n

Let’s get back to basics and clarify the function of the natal Sun. The reason Sun sign descriptions are so popular (and fairly accurate) is because the Sun is the most obvious expression of natal energy.<\/strong> It is the ego and conscious will; the part of the psyche that stands up and proclaims, “This is my purpose and how I express my conscious energy.” Ms. Scorpio’s Sun means that she expresses her purpose with all-or-nothing intensity, stubbornness and a focus on what lies underneath the surface. Her mode of being involves penetrating analysis — of herself and others. Nothing happens until she’s certain she has control. This is how she ensures her survival, which is of paramount concern for Scorpio.<\/p>\n

Sign Domination<\/h2>\n

But what if Ms. Scorpio’s Neptune, Jupiter, Moon, Mercury and Venus are all in Sagittarius? This is the sign of expansion and the big picture. Sag wants to race towards the horizon. Survival? Don’t worry about it! Sag just assumes it will all work out.<\/p>\n

A fuller picture emerges of Ms. Scorpio.<\/strong> \u00a0She needs (Moon) an area of her life where she can rise above that Scorpio intensity, and not get bogged down. Where that happens will depend on what house her Sag stellium is in. Since her Moon describes what she needs to feel satisfied, she would quickly feel suffocated if she had no space to roam in a relationship (metaphorically or literally). Also, the way she gives and receives love (Venus) is less possessive than that of a Scorpio. She wants (Venus) possibilities and external growth, not endless, inward spirals of intimacy. The way she communicates\/thinks (Mercury) is not focused on Scorpionic digging and obsessing; she’s interested in big ideas and telling entertaining stories. Depending on what houses her Sun and stellium are in (for example, if her Sun is in her hidden 12th House and her Sag stellium is upfront in her 1st House) she may barely seem like a Scorpio until you really get to know her. Of course, her Sun is still valid, but the power of her Sag stellium means that you’re in a relationship with a Scorpio and<\/em> a Sagittarian.<\/p>\n

House Domination<\/h2>\n

Sometimes the house that the Sun is in focuses its energy in an unexpected way, even if there is no stellium. This is when it’s helpful to remember the difference between signs and houses. Signs describe how<\/em> a planet’s energy is expressed, and houses describe where<\/em> (what area of life).<\/p>\n

Using Sun sign Aries as an example, you would expect Mr. Aries to be impatient, independent, bold and self-centred. Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, so he’s the initiator who doesn’t have time to hold things back. But let’s put his Sun in his 7th house of relationships. His ego is now based on being in a partnership, so it’s not all about him.<\/strong> In addition, since the 7th house is about projection, he may not even own that Aries energy for himself. Instead, he seeks out aggressive partners who embody that independence, and he’s really not that bold at all.\u00a0If he remains unconscious of these projections, he ends up with a string of partners who call the shots.<\/p>\n

If his Aries Sun is in his hidden 12th House, his conscious will is tucked away in a very private place. He may be quite secretive, even shy. If you wait for him to make the first move, or make his affections obvious, you may be waiting for a long time. He’s not comfortable being open about his intentions (unless one or more of your planets happen to aspect his Sun — then you have a backstage pass). He’s still assertive and wants to initiate, but this will happen in a very private area of his life that most people will never see. If the rest of his chart supports it, he may use his 12th House energy to be a crusader for people who need help. But the point is, no matter how he expresses his Sun, he’s not likely to come across in a typically blunt, no-time-for-secrets Aries manner. Maybe his big secret is<\/em>\u00a0his Aries fire, which is accessible only to his soulmate.<\/p>\n
