The transiting Nodes have now changed signs. The South Node has shifted from Taurus to Aries, and the North Node from Scorpio to Libra (the Nodes move backwards). Depending on the calculations used, this shift happened on February 18th (True Nodes) or March 22nd (Mean Nodes). Astrologer Steven Forrest describes the technical differences in this article.<\/a>\u00a0Regardless of the date, the meanings of the transiting Nodes remain the same. The South Node highlights areas that are coming to fruition, so that we (the collective) can move forward from those issues. Where we move to is described by the transiting North Node. Let’s explore the impact this shift may have on relationships, for everyone.<\/p>\n

The Aries\/Libra Archetypes: Me First Versus You First<\/h2>\n

First, we need to understand what Libra and Aries are all about. Aries (ruled by Mars) is the push for independence. It’s about anger, action and sex. These are the issues (relative to each person’s chart) that have been simmering for awhile, and will now reach a tipping point. What are people angry about? What are they pursuing? Are they putting themselves first? This may involve sex for some, but the bigger issue is identity and allegiance to self. Me first.<\/p>\n

These issues will have to be integrated somewhere. Ideally, that will be in Libra. Ruled by Venus, Libra is the opposite side of the Aries coin. Objective (where Aries is subjective). Harmony (instead of anger). Attraction (instead of pursuit). You first. Does this mean we’ll drop our hostilities and join together in a group hug? Sadly, no. What it does mean is that people will have the chance to integrate Libra’s lessons into their lives, by learning about themselves (Aries) through relationships.<\/strong> Libra’s symbol is the balance, but it is also the mirror (the glyph for Venus looks like a hand mirror). Libra learns by seeing herself reflected in the eyes of others. The ideal manifestation of this would be peace and harmony, but that’s a very simplistic view of how things might shake out. Libra can be just as much of a warrior as Aries, but she cloaks her assertiveness in political correctness. She refines Aries’ forward charge into a social dance, and the transiting North Node suggests new steps will be added.<\/p>\n

Cardinal Beginnings<\/h2>\n

Libra and Aries are Cardinal signs, which means they initiate. So this Nodal transit does have the potential to bring about new understandings of relationships and how assertiveness\/receptivity are used. The last time the Nodes were in Aries\/Libra was August 1995 to January 1997. Match.com (the first online dating service) was publicly launched in 1995. The most exact date I can find is “early 1995″<\/a> which suggests it was launched just before the Nodes changed signs. But it’s still an interesting correspondence to the Cardinal theme of “new.” I’m sure the timing of the launch wasn’t executed with the Nodal shift in mind, but it probably helped to accelerate the site’s popularity. The collective was ready for a new way to initiate relationships. Online dating takes the Libran theme of comparison to a whole new level: You compare yourself to profiles of your competition, and compare your prospective matches to each other.<\/p>\n

It’s difficult to say what might happen this time. But it’s not far-fetched to theorize that people are ready for another new approach to relating. The transiting South Node in Aries asks, “How am I expressing my will and getting my desires met?” The transiting North Node in Libra answers, “By looking at how you interact with others, in a one-on-one context.”<\/p>\n

The other thing to remember about Libra: Before the balance point is located, extremes are experienced. Immediate harmony is not a guarantee. People may explore the far ends of the relationship spectrum with submissiveness, or complete avoidance of conflict. Online dating can be an extreme example of Libran superficiality: quickly discarding someone if their appearance (Libra) does not match your ideal (Libra). This doesn’t have to be the case this time around, but the issue of relationship imbalance is something to be aware of when Libra is emphasized on a collective scale.<\/strong> Then again, exploring those extremes are a necessary part of the Libran learning process. As the Nodes progress, people will (hopefully) edge towards the middle ground.<\/p>\n

Since this article is focused on the general impact of the Nodal shift, it doesn’t explore how the transit might affect individual signs. How intensely you feel this transit will depend on your chart. If you have natal or progressed planets, Nodes or angles in Libra, Aries, Cancer or Capricorn, you’ll feel more of an impact than someone with nothing in the Cardinal signs. But everyone’s charts will be touched by the transiting Nodes, and what they stir up depends on the houses they activate. Also, pay attention to your natal<\/em> Mars and Venus, as these planets will tell you more (via house and sign positions) about what issues are culminating in your life, and what you can move towards.<\/p>\n
