We’ve explored what a man’s Venus sign<\/a> and woman’s Mars sign<\/a> mean. But the definitions of a man’s Venus as the type of woman that he is attracted to, and a woman’s Mars as the type of man she thinks is hot, do not encompass same-sex attraction. How do natal Venus and Mars work when sexuality does not fit the boy-meets-girl mold? And while we’re at it, how about the natal Sun and Moon?<\/p>\n

This article is not<\/em> about how you can discern someone’s sexual orientation by looking at their chart. Personally, I don’t believe you can. There’s many so-called “indicators” of homosexuality in the natal chart (for example, a strong emphasis on Uranus with the relationship planets). But I’ve seen these indicators in the charts of gay and straight people. This article is a simple exploration of how the male and female significators of attraction manifest in the charts of gay men and women. Please note that the theories in this article are based on my observations from work with clients, and light research into the charts of gay celebrity couples. These ideas are not carved in stone; the only thing I can state with absolute certainty is that sexuality is fluid, and so are the theories.<\/p>\n

Venus and Mars<\/h2>\n

Natal Venus indicates how a person gives and receives love, how they relate to themselves, and how they relate to others. Natal Mars represents the conscious expression of a person’s sexual desire. These expressions of Venus\/Mars energy are true for everyone, gay or straight, male or female. But there are also differences in how these planets work in same-sex attraction.<\/p>\n

In a gay man’s chart, Mars can describe the type of man he’s attracted to, as well as (obviously) how he expresses his male energy.<\/strong> If Chris’ Mars is in look-at-me Leo, he’s probably attracted to guys who stand out. His expression of sexual desire is proud and demanding, and he’s looking for a man who personifies that energy. The men he’s attracted to may not have Mars in Leo, but they probably have an emphasized Sun (Leo’s ruler) or their Mars aspects their Sun. If Chris’ Mars is strongly aspected by some of his natal planets (let’s say his Mars opposes his Saturn) the guys he’s drawn to may have similar Mars\/Saturn aspects. There’s something about limits, or having to work to get what he wants, that turns Chris on. And he may be attracted to other men who express their Mars within those limits. Chris’s Venus would describe how he expresses love, and his self-esteem (just as it does in anyone else’s chart).<\/p>\n

In a lesbian’s chart, Venus can indicate the type of woman she’s attracted to, and how she expresses her female energy<\/strong>. Parvati’s Venus in earthy Taurus means that she expresses her love with stability, and by creating a good life for her partner. These are qualities that make her happy. She’s attracted to other women who reflect those same qualities. For example, a woman whose Sun is in Taurus, who has Taurus Rising, or whose Venus is in Taurus would fit the bill. Add a conjunction from natal Pluto to Parvati’s Venus, and she’ll be drawn to women who express their love with the same, fixed intensity as she does. Maybe someone with a Taurus Sun, and Venus (in any sign) that squares their natal Pluto. Parvati’s Mars will describe her sex drive, and how she takes action.<\/p>\n

If someone is bisexual, I suspect that both<\/em> their Venus and Mars might come into play. Using Chris as an example again (he’s now attracted to men and women) his Venus would describe the type of women he was drawn to, and his Mars would describe the men. But gay, straight or bisexual, these planets are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to creating a full portrait of a romantic partner. The sign that the 7th House cusp is in, and its ruling planet, will describe the type of partner they’re drawn to. These qualities must be blended with the attraction indicated by natal Venus or Mars.<\/p>\n

Sun and Moon<\/h2>\n

The natal Sun and Moon are less concerned with gender-specific expressions of their energy. The Sun in anyone’s chart represents male energy: conscious, external ego and will. It’s what you put “out there.” The Moon represents female energy: internalized, instinctive needs, and what makes a person feel safe.<\/strong> This is true for all men and women, regardless of whom they’re attracted to. The Sun and Moon do play an important role in synastry, but don’t always define the type of partner that someone is drawn to. A gay man will not necessarily be attracted to any man who matches his solar energy, just as a gay woman will not always be drawn to women who personify her lunar energy.<\/p>\n

If Chris’ Sun in Aries conjuncts his partner’s Venus, this is a highly compatible, magnetic connection. If Chris were straight, he would be enhancing his partner’s female vibe. She’d feel good about the way she expressed herself as a woman when she was with him. But since Chris’ partner is a man, his assertive way of presenting himself will match and enhance<\/em> his partner’s way of showing affection. He’ll boost his partner’s self-esteem, and his partner will make Chris feel special.\u00a0If Parvati’s Scorpio Moon conjuncts her lover’s Mars, Parvati will feel challenged by her partner’s sex drive, but she’ll also be in tune with it. If she were straight, her intense needs would trigger her lover’s “man stuff;” he’d become more of a Scorpio guy around her. However, her partner is female, but Parvati is still encouraging her lover’s assertiveness and desire. Moon conjunct Mars is a hot aspect, in straight or queer synastry. If there is any<\/em> aspect between the Sun in one person’s chart, and the Moon in their partner’s chart, the Sun person (male or female) is generally the dominant one in the relationship.<\/p>\n

Overall, the message is that everyone has male and female energy in their chart. Mars\/Venus, and the Sun\/Moon, will always represent these energies. In same-sex relationships, this fact does not change, but how that energy is directed will be somewhat different from straight relationships.<\/p>\n
