Nodal contacts in synastry create a powerful draw between two people. Most powerful are conjunctions between one person’s planet and the other person’s North or South Node. The inescapable, fated\u00a0connection can be wonderfully overpowering. But sometimes, the exact thing that magnetizes two people can also end the relationship. As profound as Nodal conjunctions are, if these contacts are not handled with care, they can lead to a permanent break.<\/p>\n

The Node person feels the primary impact. The planet person will also feel that this is a significant relationship, but the Node person is the one having their past life issues (South Node) or path forward (North Node) activated. Therefore, it’s often (but not always)<\/em> the Node person who pulls away if things go awry. The scenarios described below are common causes of North\/South node relationship difficulties, but they are by no means the only things that can trigger a breakup. The good news is, there are steps that both the planet and the Node person can take to deal with these issues.<\/p>\n

Conjunctions to the South Node<\/h2>\n

South Node conjunctions\u00a0are responsible for that “We’ve just met but I feel like I’ve always known you” vibe. The South Node is a marker that describes the Node person’s past life, and when their partner’s planet conjuncts it, there is instant familiarity. This couple was involved with each other in a past life, and now they’ve reconnected.\u00a0The planets that are\u00a0most likely to\u00a0indicate a romantic relationship (or at least, a powerful attraction) are the Sun, Moon and Venus. Since the South Node also describes habits in this life, the Node person will automatically feel an intimate level of comfort with the planet person (the planet person will be tuned into the Node person’s habits). This may not sound sexy, but it can be a potent draw. Attraction (at least initially) follows the path of least resistance. But there may come a time when the Node person wants to move forward towards their North Node. How far into the relationship this happens, and with what degree of intensity, depends on the Node person’s evolutionary path. It’s possible that the Node person may feel the planet person is holding them back.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you are the planet person, know that you are a reminder of what was<\/i>, and eventually, the Node person will want to explore what could be.<\/i>\u00a0Supporting their forward momentum is the best way to be involved in their future. For example, if their North Node is in their 9th House of long-distance travel and they decide they’re ready to explore (or even relocate), you can encourage that, rather than saying something like, “You hate traveling!” It can be difficult, because you’re likely to feel threatened if you sense the Node person pulling away. It may help\u00a0if you put the situation into a larger context; the Node person is moving along their evolutionary path, rather than moving away from you, specifically.<\/p>\n

If you are the South Node person, it can help to keep your partner in the loop, rather than assuming they’ll have no interest in joining you as you move forward. Just because they’re part of your past, doesn’t mean they can’t be part of your future. Sometimes, they want to advance just as much as you do. It’s a misconception that the South Node must be completely disowned in order to progress. Evolving means building on the past, not erasing it.<\/p>\n

Conjunctions to the North Node<\/h2>\n

North Node conjunctions\u00a0can create a strong attraction, but\u00a0one that’s\u00a0not as easy as a South Node conjunction. The North Node represents the path to full potential, but that potential lies beyond the familiarity of the South Node. If someone’s planet conjuncts their partner’s North Node (especially their Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus or Mars) they are the Node person’s guide. By itself, this contact does not always suggest a romantic involvement. But if there are other synastric aspects that\u00a0indicate romance, this could be the start of a significant relationship that has the momentum to last a lifetime.<\/p>\n

What if the Node person is not ready to evolve? There’s going to be some tension with the planet person anyway, because they represent an area of the Node person’s life that is a mix of new and unnerving. Let’s look at a 4th House (home and family) North Node. The Node person may be more comfortable working (their South Node is in their 10th House of career) than settling down. But they meet someone whose Moon\u00a0sits on their North Node. The Node person feels the pull to establish a home with the Moon person, but, at the same time, is panicked at the idea. Who are they and what do they do with their life, if they aren’t focused on their job?<\/p>\n

As the planet person, you’ll have to approach this one with care. You represent the great unknown to your partner, and if you push them too hard, they may flee back to the comfort of their South Node (and away from you). You can’t force anyone to evolve<\/strong>. For the Node person, know that the planet person represents something that is in your best interest to explore. Many times, the thing about the planet person that scares you the most is what you should pay attention to (although you may want to avoid it).<\/p>\n

Sadly, endless patience and understanding on the planet person’s part cannot always forestall a breakup. The South Node person may actually need to leave the planet person behind as part of their evolutionary path. As for the North Node person, they may not be ready to move forward, now or ever. That’s their choice, because free will reigns supreme in astrology.<\/p>\n
