As you dive deeper into astrology, you’ll encounter the fascinating concept of planetary octaves. The theory suggests that the three outer, transpersonal planets—Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto—are “higher octaves” of three inner, personal planets.

Think of it like music. A higher octave note is the same note, but it vibrates at a much higher, more refined frequency. In the same way, the planetary octaves in astrology show how a personal, everyday energy is elevated to a universal, generational force.

The primary octave pairings are:

Of all these pairings, the connection between Mars and Pluto is perhaps the most visceral and potent. Mars is our personal desire, our will to act, and our drive to survive. It’s the soldier on the ground. Pluto, as its higher octave, is the divine will, the force of evolution itself, and the raw power of transformation. It’s the hidden general directing the entire war.

You cannot fully understand one without the other. In fact, Mars often acts as the agent for Pluto’s soul-level agenda. As The Inner Wheel’s founder, Dawn Bodrogi, explains, Mars is the henchman for the god of the underworld.

“Scratch the surface of an innocent, instinctual Mars, and you will find Pluto calling a lot of the shots.”

This insight is the key to understanding why our personal desires (Mars) can lead us into profound, life-altering, and often painful transformations (Pluto). The goal of this process is to purify our personal will until it aligns with a higher purpose—a state of being known as “Right Action.” To learn more about this powerful dynamic, read Dawn’s full analysis: The Power of Pluto and Mars in Astrology: The Path to Right Action.

Understanding planetary octaves in astrology allows you to see the connection between your personal struggles and the great, sweeping forces of evolution.
