I know that it has been a long time since an issue of the Gyre has been sent out. \u00a0The site, also, has been sparse, with the occasional article and\/or class announcement. \u00a0Even classes, lately, have been taken from lists of folks on my waiting lists, so some classes have not been announced\/open this year. (Don\u2019t worry, this will be remedied.) \u00a0I have also cut back my hours.<\/p>\n

The reason for this is simple.  Last September, the day before my birthday, I had a solar eclipse within 30 minutes of my natal Sun.  Life changing, of course, but I was taken by surprise at the speed at which things changed. The next month my mother had a fall and was in the hospital and then rehab for several months. She came out well and barely got back on her feet again when she had a massive stroke in early April.  She almost died seven or eight times in hospital, but somehow managed to pull through.  However, as she was pulling, she forgot to bring her mind with her.  She came back half paralyzed, unable to speak, with her mind set back to the workings of a toddler.  She recognizes us somehow, but that\u2019s all.  The priorphysical injury was nothing.  It was easy for me to take care of her.  This is different; my best friend, and my last champion, is gone.<\/p>\n

We will never share another ice-cold martini.  We will never dunk our heads in the pool on hot summer days, or slide around in the slush in an empty parking lot in winter, just for the hell of it.  We\u2019ll never again fight over nothing and laugh about it afterwards.<\/p>\n

I wasn\u2019t prepared for the shock of seeing her like this.  Where did my angry, feisty, determined mother go? It\u2019s all the more disturbing that I deal with consciousness on a day to day basis\u2014where is it, what is it, what does it consist of from an astrological point of view?  How can we grow it, how can we avoidfalling into the tar-trap of non-development?<\/p>\n

And suddenly it all began to make sense to me.  Awareness is all.  How blessed we are to be able to be aware of ourselves and the world around us, to make decisions, to make judgements, to know quality from drek, to be able to turn our backs on what is no longer contributing to our growth.  We can say \u2018yes\u2019 and \u2018no\u2019 and mean it.  Tragedy is to go through life with closed eyes.<\/p>\n

My mother will never be able to experience growth again.  The best we could wish for her is peace and rest, and to know she\u2019s loved and cared for. Maybe she retreated because it all got too much, the world out there\u2014she said \u2018enough,\u2019 and now lives in the safety of her dreams.<\/p>\n

My mother recently experienced a progressed lunar return\u2014beginnings and endings, the 27 club at the age of 81. We don\u2019t have elder astrology, and maybe we should start.  I never considered a lunar return just past eighty\u2014and yet, there it is on her chart, transited by nothing less than Pluto.  A trip to the underworld, indeed.  I mention this not to make us fearful, but to help us respect the power of beginnings and endings, especially with something as material as the Moon.<\/p>\n

I have my own major cycle, a progressed New Moon, in November, right on top of my progressed Ascendant.  A New Life. This has been a balsamic year indeed, and my fingers have had to be pried off a number of things while my wiser Self is saying, \u201cWait.\u201d  One of the things I have had to let go of is my work load, and I apologize here to all my clients and students who\u2019ve had to put up with my lateness and my cancellations and my occasional lapses of clarity.  At this particular time of my life, Neptune is winning.  Not necessarily a bad thing.  Insights have been many\u2014fodder for more work to come.  And now that the worst of it is over, I\u2019m in the mood to work and looking forward to the rest of summer and beyond.<\/p>\n

A Progressed New Moon, a 28 year cycle, a new beginning.  I never thought I\u2019d have to cross the threshold without my old friend to hold my hand.<\/p>\n
