The Magical Earth

Explore the sacred magic of Earth as the core of cosmic energy, beautifully intertwined with the mystical influence of astrology.

A colleague wrote to me the other day asking me to remind him about a discussion we once had concerning the glyph of Capricorn being representative of both male and female. Oddly, at the very moment the email arrived, I had been writing this piece on the inherent mysticism of earth signs. A nice synchronicity, and a good illustration of the magic of earth. We both have Virgo Suns.

The earth signs get a bad rap in astrology. Dull. Pedantic. Materially oriented. Overly cautious. Not the sort of people you want to get stuck with at a party. A bull, a virgin and a goat. Geez. We glug our drinks and make excuses, eyes searching desperately around the room for the flair of fire, or the friendliness of air. Even the empathetic water signs hiding in the kitchen would be better company.

I’m not a pagan, but I believe its clear to see that, as a society, we have lost the idea of the sacred earth. Of course, the earth is our home, and we should take care of it, we should respect it. But I believe our loss of connection with the earth goes a great deal deeper.

We equate earth with matter. It seems to me that we have an oddly old-fashioned, almost biblical view about matter, certainly pre-quantum: that matter is a dull, innate, dead thing requiring the other elements to bring it to life. It is inert in our eyes. The cold clay meant to receive the spark of the divine, bereft of its own divinity. This is an idea that goes back a long time in our culture, the idea that the material world and the divine world are forever separate. The Cathars took this the furthest, preaching an abject Manicheism which purports that nothing can be sacred that is of this world. (Not even Jesus himself, which is what got them burned at the stake.) Matter was not only dull for the Cathars, it was the equivalent of hell, as it separated us from the divine. I wonder how much leftover Manicheism is still leeching through our culture in subtle ways? When I lived in England and began gardening, I was surprised to find that they called garden soil ‘earth.’ In America, we called it ‘dirt.’ A very different thing all together.

Well, Einstein put paid to that idea. But it’s been nearly a hundred years since Einstein and his quantum colleagues first equated matter with energy. Matter, far from being an inert thing, is buzzing with movement at its most basic level. It is vibrating at levels beyond our imagination. And not only that, it is reactive–it alters with our perception of it. Imagine that.

Witness the incredible, unacknowledged power of Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn – the Earth signs – as they demonstrate their inherent ability to create and manipulate matter, bringing inspiration into concrete reality.

Of course, we can’t see this directly. It’s all happening at a level we can’t see. I remember, as a child, learning about atoms and wondering why I couldn’t feel my bed moving. Why couldn’t I stir my finger through it, or at least feel a buzz, if all those things were moving around in the sheets? (Which is a magic of its own, something too complex to get into here.)

Which brings us back to the secret held by all the Earth signs: the Earth is full of magic. We just don’t/can’t see it in the ordinary way.

In the heliocentric chart, the Earth is always opposite the Sun. Sun in Taurus will have Earth in Scorpio. Sun in Virgo will have Earth in Pisces. Sun in Capricorn will have Earth in Cancer. The earth needs water to create. The notorious fecundity and productivity of the Earth signs is due to the secret solar alliance with water. Earth makes manifest. Water is the conduit between divinity and matter. Surely, there is a power emanating from this very planet we live on. Why are we always looking ‘out there’ when our power is directly beneath our feet?

The unacknowledged power of the earth signs is not in stewardship (Taurus) or sorting (Virgo) or building (Capricorn). These are behaviors, actions, not ways to process and focus an inner power. The unrealized magic of the Earth signs is the ability to manipulate matter itself, the ability to literally create what we want from inspiration, thought, and desire. Without Earth energy, nothing concrete would be formed in our lives.

Real magic is the manipulation of matter. This is something earth signs know. Earth signs can master the manipulation of matter, of the material world, the present life. There are three mysteries of manipulating matter, each one represented by an Earth sign in relation to its opposite. The earth signs and their creative power.
